On second thought, I think this is just because the media has some "common wisdom" that "lefty protesters = good for the Republicans" because that was the result in 1968 and the media is too idiotic to go beyond that calculus. While that much is true, what they forget about is that the ones the protesters were protesting and opposed (ie, Democrats) LOST in that election. This time, the situation is not the same because lefty protesters are protesting the Republicans (the opposing party), not Democrats (their own party). The true "common wisdom" calculation here would be "lefty protesters protesting the party *in power* = bad for that party's chances in the upcoming election." It is still a little different because of the difference in the side opposed, but that formulation is closer than the media's current analysis.
in my most cynical moments, I think they realize this and use it anyway in the hopes that it teaches/trains/brainwashes people that when they see protesters on TV that means they should vote for Republicans, such that it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
