Thread for Wild-Ass Theories and Guesses on the spy meta-story?
You know--the story behind the story. Why is this coming out now? Was it leaked by pro-or anti-Bushies? Is it supposed to present another scapegoat for Bush on the war, or will it tar his administration with the brush of incompetence or worse?

1. This story does not help Bush. It detracts from Repug Convention

3. That was my immediate impression...
unless it somehow sets the stage to deflect an even worse story that they know is about to break, e.g. the "Blame the Jews" theory for the war.

6. I'm in the "bigger story about to break" camp.
Now's as good a time as any to start a US led holy war.

4. It was certainly timed nicely to blow the RNC out of the limelight.

5. This from a Freeper:
"Another interesting timing of this story is the fact it comes out Friday night, during the middle of the night in Israel and the fact Israel's government operations are at a minimum the next day (which means Israel will have a hard time responding quickly to the accusations fully)"

is a wild theory on why it was released today. I don't really have an opinion on it. There just isn't enough information available for me to speculate.

7. No, I don't think that's a wild theory at all. . .
mainly because I came up with the same one!

8. Aw, hell, GGM, there's nothing like too much information
to take all the fun out of wild speculation.

they know what interesting timing before a convention looks like when they see it don't they?

Why do they hate America so much is my question. I mean first they attack our nation's veterans now they act suspicious of people who are just trying to protect America from those who might steal from it or do it harm. No shame.

13. You ain't kidding.
As we say here in Texas.

I've never seen a group of people fall all over themselves like that in their rush to defend a possible spy. Of course, they're reserving final judgements until they know whether or not it was a Clinton appointee.

10. I wrote this in another thread but
it fits better here anyway:

You know - I don't think this was a Friday news dump

No other nightly news program had this story except CBS. They got the scoop from someone. Which network is perceived as the least friendly to the administration? Humm?? - CBS.

CBS ran with it because they had it and wanted to beat everyone to it.

Not so sure about CIA revenge either since this is an FBI job. But I suppose the CIA could be involved. And for sure someone at the CIA could have given CBS the scoop.

14. You bring up salient points.
Add to that the Leslie Stahl/60 minutes connection.

Stahl has been fairly aggressive in her reporting on the administration over the last year or so. I think she probably picked up some good contacts back when she was preparing her interview with Richard Clarke.

17. I Agree. This story WILL be in full swing by next week and by then
Edited on Sat Aug-28-04 04:06 AM by Dover
all the news agencies will be up to speed....at least those who report it. This speculation about the spy just builds interest.

Between Plame, Riggs Bank, Thatcher's arrest, Pinochet being stripped of immunity, and now the Chalabi connection to the Pentagon spy story.......the whole rotten empire is being dismantled globally.

It needs to happen incrementally...and hopefully this will culminate in OCTOBER for a Dem October Surprise!

12. Another thing I really don't get about this story
is why it would get leaked before the spy is even caught. Is somebody sending somebody else a "Get Out of Dodge" signal?

16. Could be Israel / Iran
Recently:

US planes flew over Iranian city probing air defence and conducting ELINT.

Iran threatened Israel with missiles.

Iranian intransigence regarding nuclear programs.

Israeli muttering about Iran.

Iranian operatives amongst Shia in Narjaf.

Chalabi leaked encryption secret to Iran.

19. yes.....AND Iran recently called an emergency meeting w/Arab nations
Edited on Sat Aug-28-04 04:52 AM by Dover
purportedly regarding the crisis building in Najaf. But it was probably also about the increased aggression from Israel and the fact that Bush just signalled that he would take a decidely handsoff approach to Israeli's actions regarding more landgrabs and other things that we had been holding them back on...

And attacking Iran seems to have been the PNAC's intention all along, which might also explain why they did not continue to foster the internal revolution and rift between the old and new guard within Iran which was just beginning to bear fruit:

Looks like Rummy needs to clean house:

Pentagon hardliners pressing for regime change in Iran have held secret and unauthorized meetings in Paris with a controversial arms dealer who was a major figure in the Iran-contra scandal, according to administration officials.

At least two Pentagon officials (Harold Rhode and Larry Franklin) working for Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Douglas Feith have held "several" meetings with Manucher Ghorbanifar, the Iranian middleman in U.S. arms-for-hostage shipments to Iran in the mid-1980s.

The senior official and another administration source who confirmed that the meetings had taken place said that the ultimate policy objective of Feith and a group of neo-conservatives civilians inside the Pentagon is regime change in Iran.

He confirmed that Secretary of State Colin Powell complained directly to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld several days ago about Feith's policy shop conducting missions that countered U.S. policy.

Harold Rhode has gotten himself in trouble before:

A delegation of Saudi diplomats attended a meeting at the Pentagon with deputy secretary of defense Paul Wolfowitz in the spring of 2001, shortly after the Bush administration had taken office. As the meeting was breaking up, one of the attendees, Harold Rhode -- Wolfowitz's Islamic affairs adviser -- approached Adel Al-Jubeir, a soft-spoken Saudi diplomat who is foreign policy adviser to Crown Prince Abdullah. Rhode told Al-Jubeir that once the new administration got its affairs in order there'd be no more pussyfooting around, according to a source familiar with the meeting. The United States would take care of Saddam and start calling the shots in the region, and the Saudis would have to fall in line. Al-Jubeir demurred.

Rhode then shoved his finger in the diminutive Saudi's chest and told him, "You're not going to have any choice!"

and that would be difficult to stop once started.

20. Ain't so wild-ass
All we need do is review modern Middle Eastern History and the relations between Israel and the Arab World. (Read Avi Shlaim's The Iron Wall)

Not wild-ass at all.

We may have been trying to put a wrench in the works.
