Spy Question: Who Leaked It?
Did the Whitehouse leak it?

The FBI? Who?

Was it leaked to stop the investigation dead in it's tracks, or did it leak of it's own velocity?

Who gave the story to CBS? Any ideas?

Is the spy still on the loose, running for his life? Or will he be able to make it back to Israel before he gets rolled up?

1. Please note that this is a Friday PM leak (suspicious)
The timing of this was after close of business on the last Friday in August during the Olympics and with all the news organizations already moving operations to NYC for the convention.

The leak could be to fuck up the convention or was driven by uncontrollable outside developments, but to me the timing seems designed to minimize the story.

So keep open the notion that this is pre-emptive WH leak, and what follows from that. That doesn't diminish the story in any way, but it invites the question of whether the few details released were selected to paint a specific picture that minimizes damage to the WH.

The pentagon has only known about this investigation for a few days. Then LEAK. The Sandy Berger story was unknown to anyone at the WH. Then Gonzales was notified about it and then within a few days... LEAK. What I am saying is that this leak probably did not come from Justice. And if it comes from the Pentagon is it timed and designed to limit the scope? You bet.

7. HUH? Of Course The WH/Rove Knew About Berger The Whole Time
and sat on it until just before the DNC.

10. I think it was leaked less than 48 hours after entering the WH
Edited on Fri Aug-27-04 08:57 PM by troublemaker
Of course they would have sat on it for optimal timing if they had to, but they didn't have to. The investigators notified Gonzales, then it was leaked very quickly. (As you've probably noticed, these people are fuckin' lucky sometimes.)

8. Just read
Another thread wherein a poster says that Israel is in the midnight and tomorrow being the sabbath, it will be awhile before they can get their response going.

Where did you hear the pentagon knew about it for a few days?

But who was it that leaked it to CBS? That has a lot to do with how far the case was going. Could it be that the spy was being wiretapped and the WH knew that they had best put an end to it before any more info was passed along?

Or did some patriot in the pentagon let it roll?

11. CBS story said investigation is over a year old but
the pentagon was only informed a few days ago.

If I was Rove and knew this was out there ready to break I would definitely want to break it myself before the convention (and controlling the leaked details)

Next step will be a lot of calls to people in Justice, and we will see how comprehensive the initial leak really is.

14. I heard on Norville show
from Steve Emerson ? that the investigation into a spy in the Pentagon was going on for over 2 years.

Course, we probably will never know the true story.

I think it was leaked to derail the investigation.

2. It was leaked to keep the investigation
from being buried like the Plame investigation and the anthrax mailing investigation.

The Asscrack DOJ is a black hole into which important cases vanish never to be seen again.

18. Rand Beers, maybe?
Edited on Fri Aug-27-04 09:05 PM by BeFree
He might have caught wind of it from his former security agency types.

Then he would have worked with Kerry to establish an optimal time for the story to break.

Ya gotta admit, on Friday night, just before the RNC was about to splash, and Israel in the dark with the Sabbath, the story will go around the world without a pause, and keep boosh from getting any sleep the next couple of days..

5. WH Wouldn't Leak To CBS, IMO
and this is perfectly timed before the RNC.

Payback for Sandy Berger before the DNC.

13. Once the pentagon is notified the information is
known to some career people (not political appointees) so it will leak soon.

Knowing that, leaking it tonight is the best of a series of bad options. Can you immagine if this leaked next Tuesday or Wednesday night? That would be the optimal timing for damage.

6. I don't know about the WH leaking the story
I don't think they'd want any potentially damaging stories interfering with the four day "Bush is Lord" service.

My guess someone within the FBI talked to CBS who broke the story.

Or will it be another, "See, it's not our great President's fault. He was duped by a cut throat Israeli spy. Our great President vindicated yet again from any wrong doing."

21. NO, not this time 'cause the FBI
has said they have wire-taps, survellience, and other stuff. I think what's interesting is the timing and who put the bug in the FBI's ear to investigate this.

We've discussed here the OSP but never a word about it by the media. Weird.

23. I see the spy as...
A possible two way connection between boosh and Sharon, not a spy just for Israel but a pipeline for info to flow back and forth between the two leaders. Of course, to an outsider, he would look like a spy, but to the players in the pentagon he would be known as the one man who could pass info directly to Sharon from boosh and from boosh to Sharon, bypassing both the CIA and Mossad.

Afterall, the CIA had big problems with how the intelligence used for the war was established. Was boosh getting what he needed through Sharon without it being vetted by any intelligent agencies? Looks that way to me.

Seems like Bush* Co. can't get any objective intelligence. Or is that the way they shift the blame when the ends justify the means?

24. Don't get your hopes up.
This may be a plot to accuse the spy of all the bad things done in connection with leaks re Niger.

How can you have an israeli spy when you are one and the same with Israel through matching policy of neo-cons with Sharon, plus matching intelligence, matching lobbies, matching and crossing organizations and think tanks. Perle, Feith, Wolfowitz are the same as Israel. I want to see this turn out to be a spy that will hurt the neo-cons, but I don't see how.

The Friday night timing is a myth - how can you bury spying? They have a scapegoat. The part about a one year or two year investigation may be crap and dressing.

Caution. Because they are all one and the same. We've been saying that on this forum for months.

What is the scenario that would make it bad for them and good for Dems? I'm open, but I'm more suspicious of the neo-cons then open.

25. Funny you ask
I was sitting there listening to this story and started wondering, why is this being leaked now and who leaked it? I was going to pose this question when I saw your thread. Here's my guess.

The Kerry camp leaked it. The leaked it through CBS perhaps through Kerry's brother, the attorney, who represents many affiliates. Why? Three reasons: payback for the Bush* order to get Osama during the Democratic convention (but this is just as big and perhaps even better); take Kerry off the defensive by stopping the Swiftboat talk; put Bush* on the defensive by leaking this stunning story; Kerry to Bush* -- go negative on me, you Texas twerp, and I will pay you back thrice over. Message delivered. Kerry's quite as capable as fighting just as dirty as Karl Rove, and I believe the White House might just be starting to see the evidence of that.

This is just my private theory. I have no facts. But it does seem to fall into place. Something drastic had to be done to stop the damage being caused by the Swiftboat coverage, so Kerry stepped up to the plate and hit back.
