BBV - Jefferson County Alabama - Cell phones, Modems, and Miscounts
This may be old news, but tonight was the first time I ran across it.

Hundreds of votes found in court race

Jefferson County Republican Party Chairman Gilbert F. Douglas III said he suspected something was amiss with vote tallies Tuesday night when he saw that more than 60,000 votes had been cast in one of the Republican delegate races. Douglas said he knew that figure had to be wrong because only 30,000 votes were cast in the Jefferson County Republican primary

Jefferson County officials said results in 14 Republican races at the end of the ballot were skewed from one voting machine at the Vestavia Hills Civic Center. There was a problem with the transmission of information from the machine's modem through a cell phone to the downtown courthouse Tuesday night.

Results from that machine's modem showed that Bolin had eight votes, Stokes had 20, Peggy Givhan had two and Denny Holloway had six.

The mistake was discovered early Wednesday. Officials investigated and ran the machine's memory card, which they say revealed the correct totals. The new results from that one machine showed Bolin with 340 votes; Stokes, 60; Givhan, 30; and Holloway, six.
