NYT: San Diego veering left! Clear Channel adds Air America there
Left Is Gaining in San Diego, a Rightist Bastion
By NEAL MATTHEWS

Published: August 28, 2004

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 27 - With the nation's first openly gay district attorney, a majority of Democrats on the city council and this week's invasion by the Air America liberal talk radio network, San Diego is in danger of losing its image as a bastion of West Coast conservatism.

On Monday, Clear Channel Communications, syndicator of Rush Limbaugh and owner of more than 1,200 radio stations nationwide, started broadcasting Al Franken and his left-leaning Air America cadres on Clear Channel stations in San Diego and Ann Arbor, Mich. That makes five cities, including Miami; Portland, Ore.; and Santa Barbara, Calif., where Clear Channel broadcasts Air America. The company is expected to announce soon that a sixth station it owns will switch to a "progressive'' format. Air America is also broadcast in 18 other cities, including New York, where it is heard on WLIB-AM (1190).

"Clear Channel is now the biggest affiliate group carrying Air America," said Jack Messmer, executive editor of Radio Business Report, a trade publication....

9. I so agree! I lived there for 15 years
in the '70's & '80's and only got into politics much later in 2000.

So I didn't know what it was when I was there but was later thinking that it must be the Naval Station in San Diego and the Marines at CAmp Pendleton in Ocean Beach.

Although, if the military would wake up and realize what bush did to them(used them for Iraq to furthur his political career)..they would all be for Kerry NOW!

The Iraqi Soccer team realizes it!

7. Well FINE, but do you think they could get themselves up here to L.A.?
DAMN! We had it on some crappy little station with a bad signal out in San Bernardino for about two-and-a-half weeks, and that was IT. Well, at least it's spreading SOMEWHERE.

8. So....Whassup w/ Clear Channel? Are they out of kool-aid?
I'm surprised Clear Channel....neoconservative bastion of the 'waves' that it is, is allowing AA to have such access.

:bounce: I LOVE IT!!! :bounce:

 I just don't GET it!

Did I miss some DU news about how come they're allowing free speech all of a sudden?

11. Well, SD is a loooong way from veering left, but it's a start.
Boys and girls are weaned on RW propaganda here. It will take more than one little radio station to wake these sleepers up.

12. Thanks , that was interesting.
Apparently there are more Democrats than Republicans in San Diego the city, but more Republicans than Democrats in the San Diego County.
