"As soon as I saw they were soldiers, I knew...". Those were the first words my oldest sister said to me last night, spoken as soon as I closed the screen door leading from the carport into her small, neat kitchen. "I'm so sorry" were the only words my numbed and racing brain could find as I held her tightly, her entire body trembling in my arms like that of a small, frightened bird, her heart beating wildly, her breath ragged and broken with sobs. It was then that I knew the awful truth--- a truth I had tried to deny even as Paddy and I rushed to her house--- my nephew Chuckie was dead, another casualty in George Bush's megalomaniacal drive for power.

Chuckie--- Spc. Charles L. Neely, Jr.--- died early Thursday morning in Tikrit, if what the Army has told my sister and brother-in-law is true, the victim of a roll-over accident involving his semi-truck and a pontoon bridge. His death is but another meaningless, senseless death in a meaningless, senseless war that did not have to be, but was chosen to be.

Chuckie was my sister's 'golden child', bright as a new penny, personable, good-looking, affectionate and ambitious, one of life's incurable optimists. He was my parents' first grandchild, a living affirmation of their strong, shared belief in the goodness of America, a nation where the children and grandchildren of immigrants can dream enormous dreams, and then see them come true. Chuckie dreamed those dreams, and shared them with anyone who would listen.

Like so many of my people, Chuckie saw his entryway into the middle class through the armed forces of this nation; educational benefits dovetailed neatly with his fierce patriotism and desire to 'give something back' to America, something else that is characteristic of my people. So strong was this desire that he did not even wait to graduate high school to enter the Army Reserves, obtaining his parents' permission to join just days after his 17th birthday in the summer of 2002, between his junior and senior year in high school. I never saw him stand straighter or display more pride than he did when his unit--- the Army's 454th Transportation Company--- was ordered to Iraq late last summer. He told me then that his dream of becoming a school teacher would have to wait a little longer, because his country called, and he had sworn an oath to answer that call if it came.

I still cannot fully comprehend what has happened, or make my heart believe that I will never again see the proud young soldier who was more like a brother to me than a nephew. Though my heart is broken, no tears have yet come, blocked by a hard knot of white-hot anger that borders on rage. I am angrier than I have ever been in my life, and every fiber of my being demands to know who has done this terrible thing to my family. For the first time in my life, I have seen my strong, macho father cry, and seen my mother's beautiful, unlined face become haggard overnight. I have held my younger brothers while they cried, and watched my brother-in-law do small, meaningless and repetitive acts like wiping off the kitchen counter, because he cannot be still and allow himself to be alone with his thoughts, considering the enormity and emptiness of a future which does not include his first-born child.

As I write this, my shirt is still wet with other people's tears, but there are none of my own mingled with them, although I'm sure that those will come in time. I know who is responsible for my family's pain, and I know who killed my nephew just as surely as if he had put a gun to his temple and executed him; I will never forget this awful crime, or the tens of thousands of identical crimes that George Bush and his evil cabal have perpetrated on other families, both here and across the face of the globe. I will demand that these criminals be brought to justice, and their crimes punished, but I will not do it today, or even this week, because today I must be strong for my family, and help to bury the young soldier who was my nephew.

May God have mercy on your soul, Chuckie, and may He grant you eternal rest, peace, joy and light. I will bless His name for the gift He made to our family, the gift of your 19 years of life on earth. Vaya con Dios, Carlito...

Please accept my hearfelt condolensces. I was just reading a story in the NY Times about a local area mother whose son was killed in Baghdad and how she also felt white hot rage against the criminals who perpetrated this horrible illegal immoral war.

It is a system that confines the less privileged among us to the military while those whose families can afford a college education for their kids go off to what is little more than a four year bar tab for many. That system needs to be changed. The rich need to feel the pain and loss that the poor and lower middle class is feeling in this war. Until then NOTHING will change.

Until that Republican donor in wealthy Ladue, Missouri sees his/her kid come home in a box the war remains something other people's kids do.

It's about class not gender, IMHO.

NO parent should ever have to bury a child, and it is so much more an atrocity when that death is so senseless, so very senseless, and the victim so terribly young. I had to do a double-take on his birth year. "1985? 1985? Why, that was only ... that was just slightly more than 15 years ago. Uhhh, 19 to be exact."

Yours is one of the most moving tributes I've ever seen, a gift to all of us.

We received a call from our nephew last night, 20, in the marines and headed off for his second tour of duty in Iraq. He called to find out what was happening in Iraq as they have kept his unit away from the TV and radio and any electronic devices where they could see the news. He told us he has a very bad feeling. His group is going to Nafir.

We are a sick nation to continue this charade where the children of the non-rich are sent to fight and some are slaughtered for the lies of those in power.

God help us all.

I can't seem to come up with anything to say that would truly heal the pain you and your family must be going through but please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you.

I'm at work and I just read Paddy's thread that had a link to this one and while I was reading this, the emotions got the better of me and the tears came flooding in. I had to get up from my best and walk away.

Please let us know if we can do anything for you. You have a lot of friends here supporting you at this time.

My heart aches for you and your family, and for all the families that are going through the same thing. These kids are my age, and this is my generation and to see them perish needlessly like their fore bearers in Vietnam is something I can't fully wrap my head around. They need to come home now so they can salvage what is left of their youth...

I'm almost overwhelmed, reading all the kind words of love and support in this thread. There is nothing that I or anyone else can do now to help Chuckie, other than to see him decently and lovingly buried, but there is something we can to help Mari333: we can try and keep her son here at home, rather than being returned to Iraq. That would be a fitting tribute to my nephew.

183. I have never ever understood WHY it has to become entirely
personal (one of their own) for people to be able to feel empathy and sympathy for what is happening. WHY?!? Why does it have to "hit home" for them to begin to question and see reality?

Thankfully, I have no close family or friends (that I know of) over there. But, still, I have long been able to see the wrongness in what our country is doing to both our soldiers and the citizens of Iraq.

I honestly don't believe I coult take it if I did have a close relative or friend over there. I can't even imagine what your family has been through. Still, I have the utmost sympathy for you and feel grief for each of you. How I wish that I could do more. Just know that I am soooo terribly sorry for your loss and what your family has to suffer. I wish I had more words that would help.

Accidents happen in the military no matter who is in the Oval Office. I can say this as a member: whether at war or at peace, the military is no ordinary job, and death can find you whether you are home, or abroad. Consider the poor kid from Utah who died of heat exhaustion at Ft. Jackson this year. Private Nish was his name, and he'd still be dead, whether Bush was in office or no. I realize it may seem callous to call for restraint at a time like this, but do all of you who currently condemn Bush to the "15th circle of hell" feel the same way about all the soldiers who died under Clinton's watch? What about those who will surely continue to die in 2005 once Kerry is in the White House?

I am sorry for the loss of an apparently bright and young patriot. I see them all the time when I serve with my Reserve unit, and they are young men and women we Americans ought to be grateful for, because they are (obviously) willing to sacrifice everything for the sake of their country, their love of their principles, their families, and their want to walk the talk.

Having said that, I think it's inappropriate to personally blame the President every time a troop dies in a military accident. Military deaths due to accident happen regardless of who is in the White House. Again, those currently pushing hat pins into the heads of Bush voodoo dolls would be wise to consider their words given the fact that lots of uniformed service members are going to die when Kerry is in office, too. Whether Kerry pulls us out of Iraq or not.

Food for thought, folks.

Tony - I am so very sorry for your loss.

I lost a dear friend to this war early on, which I feel I should explain in order to share the following thoughts with you: my nephew and godson, born a year after my friend's death in Iraq, was christened last weekend. My sister, in a beautiful gesture, named him after my late friend. I looked at that tiny baby, and started my journey as an aunt; of beginning to know what your nephew, Chuckie, means to you. I also found a peace in knowing that the circle of life is continued, even though that circle may sometimes be tattered, loosened, its links askew.

May God grant Chuckie peace, and may God help you and your family in your time of mourning.

This week was the anniversary of my father's and niece's deaths and last week was the anniversary of the death of my partner. I am Jewish and on the anniversary of a loved one's death(jahrzeit) we say Kaddish, or the mourner's prayer.

When my family said Kaddish today, I also had the names of your nephew and Mari333's husband on my lips as well. They are not part of my family, but I don't think God minded.

Something is wrong when a country that claims to love liberty and freedom can destroy the lives of so many people so quickly. It is unjust and disgusting and I would tear apart the people responsible limb by limb if I could. This has been such a tragic week that I can barely keep up. This war is the sickest, most horrible thing that has happened to this country in my lifetime.

Your nephew was a brave, honorable, beautiful young man. He should have lived a long and rich life, but instead he is dead at the hands of the psychopath in the White House.

I will work as hard as I can to help remove Bush and try to put a stop to this senseless slaughter.

Someone asked me at a protest why I was doing what I was doing.

Your nephew was my age. I or my friends could be next. I protested because I knew things like this were going to happen. I protested because I knew young boys my age were going over there for nothing but bush's interests.

I protested to honor those who died for an unjust cause there and now for your nephew and family also.

I wish my generation that so adimately support this war would read this, and I wish they would realize this could be them next.
