Reposting this because I fear for the future we face if Bush is re-elected:
The definition of terrorism is now more a matter of political expedience and exploitation than about reducing terrorism.
Either that or we are supposed to believe that terrorism is defined as an action against right wing interests.
Case in point:
Vandalise or burn a Hummer dealership and you automatically declared an eco-terrorist by the FBI.
However if you pipe bomb a stem cell research laboratory you get this kind of mealy-mouthed explanation:
``There's no reason to believe it's a terrorist act, but there is reason to believe that someone wanted to do harm to that company,'' said a source familiar with the investigation.
Police and federal officials would not discuss possible motives for the bombing, but a source said officials have recovered several parts of the bomb and believe the bomber had a beef with the company or the focus of its research .
Now apparently we are supposed to believe that the "someone" who had a beef with the focus of research apparently objected to the notion of successfully treating "metabolic liver disorders and diabetes" (Imagine the nerve of those monsters trying to cure diabetes and liver disorders?) through therapeutic organ and cell regeneration.
Nah, it couldn't have anything to do with the fact that they used stem cells in their research, right? Because if we admitted that, then it just proves there are some right wing nutjob terrorists and everyone knows that terrorists are all evil socialists, anarchists, athiests, animal rights activists, and evil enviromentalists.
Some days when I think about what is becoming of the country I love, I just want to weep.
Terrorism is terrorism. If you vandalise a car dealership to make a political point, it's terrorism. If you pipe bomb a research facility to make a political point, it's terrorism.
This notion of splitting hairs in the war on terror chills me to the bone because it's a sign of the direction our country is taking if they can continue to get away with it. They WILL use strong anti-terrorism legislation against those people who don't fall on the proper side of the political spectrum and it will very likely be expanded to quell civil expressions of dissent against the powers that be.
Yeah, it may sound a little paranoid, but those are the times we live in. I don't trust my government anymore.
