Whitley Strieber Gets Freeped
Although the mere mention of the name "Whitley Strieber" makes many DUers gasp with revulsion, he's One Of Us and has been for some time. His website (www.UnknownCountry.com), although mainly dedicated to the paranormal, frequently features stories and links on topics of interest to DUers, especially climate change issues. (Strieber co-wrote The Coming Global Superstorm, which inspired the movie The Day After Tomorrow.) He also recently posted his personal memories of John O`Neill, his old classmate and chief SwiftBoater.

So lately, Strieber posted a poll question on John Kerry ("Do you believe that John Kerry deserves his Vietnam medals?"). But I'll let Whitley tell you more about it ...
We Get Pollwhacked!
26-Aug-2004

A small number of users repeat voted in our current poll about John Kerry and the Swiftboat Ads. Oddly, a few of them repeated on both sides of the question, but by far the largest number of repeat votes were in favor of Kerry being a liar. We have adjusted the poll to remove most of these repeats, and, when it was adjusted, it appeared that you are divided over Kerry's record in about the same way as the country as a whole. We will install poll software that will make it harder to repeat votes, so that this sort of abuse will not recur. To vote in our current poll (once, please!) click here.

He might be best known for his contact with alien life forms, but the alien life form at work here seems to be one well-known to the experts in strange fauna here at DU -- it bears the unmistakable mark of the North American Yellow-Bellied Freeper!

2. some people here knee-jerk in a big way ... Whitley is ok by me ....
The Wolfen was a terrifying book so even before the whole Communion embroglio, he was a formidable writer.

I'm on his side. Folks should cut him some slack.

8. I've seen dozens of them...
but I'm not saying they were alien "space ships", I just couldn't identify them.

One instance was very strange, I was flying home by myself in the wee hours (delivered some people to Detroit)...I would often turn off all the lights inside the plane, even the instrument lights and ...well, marvel at the night skies. I noticed an INCREDIBLY bright light just above the horizon...it was impossible to tell how far away it was, but I thought at the time it couldn't be very distant given the luminosity.
And it had very little relative motion to me, which indicated it was travelling either straight toward me or straight away (or not moving at all)...after about half a minute it disappeared completely. I called the nearest ARTCC (I think it was Kansas City but not sure now) and asked about any traffic in the area, they said nothing reported or on radar. Weird. :-)
