He ran into some trouble while touring Caracas in 1958 (I think it was). There is a famous photograph of RMN waving his patented "V for victory" signs with an extremely unhappy look on his face, while a riot transpires around him.

The point of this thread is well taken, though. Clinton was unpopular in Greece, as has been pointed out elsewhere on DU. But he could go most places. Eisenhower could go around the world, even if his VP wasn't so highly regarded and America was known to be crawling with protoFreepers. I mean, talk about an American who did good for the world and got respect for it.... Kennedy could go all over and wave at crowds of people who wanted to like him and usually ended up doing so.
Often in the past, the President of the United States has deserved the title "leader of the Free World" and has been treated as such. Not now. Damn, not now.
This must change.
