Holy Roller Hipocrites....a huge factor
There are so many dynamics at work in our culture, but I think that quite a lot of the current cultural polarization is due to what I like to call the Holy Roller Hypocrites - they claim to be "Christian", live Christian lives, but are actually (wittingly or unwittingly) as un-Christian (in their principles and values) as could be...where they fall down is forgetting the primary principle of generosity, open mindness and sharing. * and company are perfect leaders for their mis-directed beliefs. I just hope that most of the people on the rabid right pack something really light for the afterlife - they are going to wind up somewhere very different than they expect!

1. Christ is about AGAPE LOVE, unconditional, nonjudgemental.
fundigelicals are old testament pharasees, judgemental, legalistic.

If Jesus returned, they would crucify him immediately.

3. Life isn't black or white
It's easier to see everything in black or white, but life isn't this way .The radio idiots limbaugh, hannity, o'really , always depict issues in the most simplistic way, complex issues, are spoken about in up or down terms, an immature , if not idiotic treatment of sometimes very complex issues. Religion is one of the great venues where issues are seen with dogmatic views , which help the church keep the fold in toe.Individuals are scorned, and in other times killed for not marching instep. bush has taken a page from this saying "either you are with us or against us" evocing a classic fight of good or evil.Issues, like human beings are complex are not simple. The true sign of marurity, or wisdom, is the ability to see the nuances, and god do they hate that word.

5. Maybe it's a quirk of the language but,
I resent how "Christian" has become synonymous with "virtuous."

Especially when you consider the ambiguities that fundy Xtians think it means anti-choice, homophobic and misogynist.

Fortunately, I have never been a Christian, so I don't have that burden to carry.

6. Well, we're plagued with fundamentalists.
Strangely, they're the same kind of theocratic assholes that plague some of the middle eastern countries they complain so much about. They really are the same sort of people, with different clothes.

It totally turns the tables on the so-called Christian Right and the Religious Right in general.

10. You know, it's interesting
If you look at history, there have always been periodic upswings in religious fervor - the Inquisition, the Great Awakening, etc. Times when religious issues reached a fever pitch and overwhelmed most other issues. I've never studied that particular phenomenon exclusively so I don't know for sure what the social and political climates were at those times. It might be enlightening to look into - to see just what similarites might be found to these times.
