Juan Cole: Fomenting a War on Iran

http://www.juancole.com/2004_08_01_juancole_archive.html#109376785516786360

Franklin's movements reveal the contours of a rightwing conspiracy of warmongering and aggression, an orgy of destruction, for the benefit of the Likud Party, of Silvio Berlusconi's business in the Middle East, and of the Neoconservative Right in the United States. It isn't about spying. It is about conspiring to conscript the US government on behalf of a foreign power or powers.

So it transpires that the Iranians were willing to give up 5 key al-Qaeda operatives, whom they had captured, in return for MEK members.

Franklin, Rhode and Ledeen conspired with Ghorbanifar and SISMI to stop that trade. It would have led to better US-Iran relations, which they wanted to forestall, and it would have damaged their proteges, the MEK.

Since high al-Qaeda operatives like Saif al-Adil and possibly even Saad Bin Laden might know about future operations, or the whereabouts of Bin Laden, for Franklin and Rhode to stop the trade grossly endangered the United States.

30. Curiouser and curiouser
Juan Cole also mentions Michael Ledeen, who Katherine Yurica links to Pat Robertson, the founder of the Christian Coalition. These people are waiting and hoping for the end-times.

BTW, did you know that Pat Robertson resigned his position as president of the CC in Dec. 2001, and it was widely viewed by the far-right-wing(nut) evalngelists as a symbolic act indicating that George Bush had ascended to the throne?

22. What is Berlusconi's business in the Middle East?
Oil? I'd love it if Juan Cole expanded on that
point.

26. well...this is kinda weird about Berlusconi
so read it with one eye closed...

from:
http://www.fulfilledprophecy.com/visiting_roman_prince.html

The Visiting Roman Prince
For students of Bible prophecy, here's an intriguing bit of news. This week Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi will be visiting the Middle East and Israel (Read about it here).

Berlusconi says he's making this visit at the request of US president George W. Bush. And, as you may know, in only a few weeks Berlusconi will begin his Italian presidency of the European Union.

Why is this of interest to students of prophecy? Because, according to the Old Testament book of Daniel, in the end-times -- after Israel has been restored as a nation -- a Roman prince will come and sign a seven-year agreement with Israel, which he will break only 3 1/2 years later (Daniel 9:27).

But the prophet Daniel wasn't the only one who warned about this event. When Jesus was asked about what the sign of His coming and the end of the ages would be, He answered:

"Therefore, when you see the ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains (Matthew 24:15-16 New American Standard Bible).

And regarding the coming of the Lord the Apostle Paul said the same thing. He said:

"Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction (2 Thessalonians 2:3).

Does this mean I think Berlusconi is that coming Roman prince? No, I don't think so.

Why? Because, Berlusconi is the prime minister of Italy, and is a member of the EU's new 10-nation military alliance. As you know, I suspect this 10-nation alliance could be the 10-horns on the head of the first beast from the sea in Revelation 13, and the fourth beast from the sea in Daniel 7.

In Daniel 7 it says an 11th horn will come up among the 10. And this horn will be small and different from the others. So, since Italy is one of the first 10 horns, I don't think Italy could also be the 11th.

However, I certainly believe we may be seeing the stage being set for that future deal between Israel and foretold Roman prince in Berlusconi's Middle East tour.

Here's why I think this: Last November I wrote a commentary about a report in the Jerusalem Post that Israeli Foreign Minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, asked Italian prime minister Berlusconi to look into the possibility of Israel joining the EU. Soon after, Netanyahu went to Italy to discuss the issue with Berlusconi. And, according to Jerusalem Post's Herb Keinon, at this meeting Netanyahu also brought up the idea about Israel adopting the Euro.

Since this meeting, Berlusconi said he was in favor of Israel joining the EU. Now, with his EU presidency only weeks away, the Italian prime minister is already touring the region.

Here's my point: By the time an agreement about membership is reached between Israel and the EU, the new, super EU will be on the scene. And, if certain powerful people get their way, the EU will have one, powerful figure running the EU's entire foreign and security policy and heading their 10-nation military. In fact, these people want this figure's new office to be raised to be on an equal footing with EU member states.

So, whoever this person turns out to be, that's the man I think I'll watch.

9. Ahhhhh, the oft-touted (almost vaporware) WA Monthly article
Edited on Sun Aug-29-04 05:47 PM by Eloriel
finally hit. Thanks for the link.

Off to read said link.....

Edited to add: it provides an absolutely precious view of the gang who couldn't shoot straight freelancing foreign policy and intel on their own, despite direct orders to the contrary. These people really ARE very, very dangerous. But then we knew that. We also knew all about their unlimited hubris, something else revealed very nicely in the article.

As for a tectonic plates shifting, I'm not at all sure. Bush's appointees can do no wrong, and he's ever so good at keeping Americans in the dark while he bobs and weaves and his press boot/ass lickers follow and parrot every change of subject and every bit of spin.

We'll see.

Glad Dadcom is pissed, tho. He should be.

32. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but
It appears that someone in David Fieth's office (who works in DOD under Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz) is sharing/collaborating with AIPAC who is sharing/collaborating with the Israeli's in forming ME policy. Also had a large hand in the phony prewar intel that *bush relied on to take us into Iraq. Also were actively involved in getting us to take on Iran for regime change there as well. I'm sure there's more but that's a start.

35. for more background
also check out juancole's blog (www.juancole.com) and laura rozen's blog (www.warandpiece.com) both have been following the related stories which now seem to be converging (the chalabi stovepiping story - emanating out of Fieth's office, and in which Rhodes (now at the center of the FBI probe about intelligence being passed to Israel) played a role. The current story - seems to indicate that a similar game is being played in Iran - with Ghorbifor (sp?) playing the role of Chalabi (the bad intel passer - with interest in overthrowing the current regime; an intel passer who has been on a "burn" list by the CIA for being known for fabrication.)

In this story there is yet another big tie in to yet another intel/OSP (office of Fieth) story... remember the yellowcake Niger story? A big player in passing the bad intel along was the Italian Intel service ... who plays a part in the current story - the meetings between Rhodes et al and Ghorbifor... around the same exact time (Dec 2001) the yellowcake forgeries get put into circulation. Remember there is information that indicates that the intel was known to be false from the beginning and was planted and pushed in such a way that it would get into the US intel agencies hands. If I recall - Leeden (conservative writer/operative) played a role in that drama - as well as in this current one with Iran.
