Tell me what Republicans look like!
Seriously, for us New Yorkers, how should we spot them? Any identifying characteristics? Dead give-aways? Just wondering...

You're wrong......Dead wrong.

20. Bush will only be there for 4 hours

I wasn’t talking about the candidates, I was talking about the people who support them.

The big fat Coward from Crawford will only be at his convention for no more than 4 hours.

The chickenshit Bush will probably leave the motor running the whole time.

How is that for a 'stereotype' ??

38. So you're arguing that George Bush is not a COWARD?
Interesting. Please provide evidence. Any evidence at all. Because as you well know, there is none. The Coward from Crawford will spend four hours in NY and then scram like a big fraidy-cat. He wants to exploit New York but he won't sleep here. I wonder if you would?

91. No it wasn’t

"my response was not even regarding Bush, but the crack about his supporters"

No it wasn’t, it was about John Kerry's wife. And you are aware that Mr. Heinz was a super-rich Republican, right?

And Bush is a coward in so many ways..

Bush dodged the draft.

Bush ran and hid in a hole in Nebraska on 911, ... on Sept 11 Rudi Giuliani was the leader of the US not the coward Bush.

Bush was a coward to not come out and face Max Cleland.

Bush is even afraid of questions, the Bush coward makes everyone sign an 'oath of loyalty' before they are permitted into any event where a question might be asked.

I could go on forever about the Coward from Crawford.

97. We are not cynical about those who are suffering under George Bush
Those who lost family members on 9/11 when Bush failed to take any action at all to thwart the terrorist attack he was fully warned was imminent. Those who lost family members in Iraq when George Bush lied us into war to fulfill his sponsors' global agenda of colonization. Those millions who lost their jobs, and their health insurance. Those who lost their life savings to Bush's sponsors at Enron. I could go on, but you get the picture. We are dead serious about the tragedies caused by this maladminitration.

But when it comes to the would-be dictator George Bush Junior and his idiotic followers, yes, we are quite cynical, and rightly so. And we don't need any infusions of anything in that regard, thanks anyway.

...on always bringing Jane Fonda into this? She's over. Irrelvant. Passe. (Reason I ask is at a rally I was at to protest Cheney coming to town, some old coot came over and repeatedly got in our faces asking if "Jane was invited." We kept asking him if that was the best he could come up with as a taunt.)

And it's good to see that the United States education system is still doing its usual bang-up job. Or is "Y," "R," and "U" secret code, or something?

(And if the babe in the first picture is flipping someone off, someone might want to clue her in on what finger to use.)

21. Why is demonization necessary?
I know I am developing a rep as a contrarian around here, but what does it help to demonize the "other side"? Isn't that just a tad hypocritical for this group, which pats itself so often on the back for thinking, acting, and voting Liberally? This current election cycle has already seen the public discourse devalued to the point of worthlessness, now we add to it with cheap stereotyping?

The truth is you CAN'T spot a conservative or Republican, just as you can't spot a liberal or a Democrat. There is no guaranteed "packaging". That college dude with the tie-dye shirt, long hair and the flip-flops might be a Young Republican, while the fellow in the three-piece suit with the high shine on his shoes is a card-carrying member of the ACLU and donates to the DNC every election year. We get ourselves into trouble if we assume their is a "look" to watch for, and we're liable to feel foolish barking at anyone who might turn out to be a friend, or buddying up to someone with whom we share almost nothing politically in common.

In the end, we're all AMERICANS, right? Doesn't that count for something?

Yeah, it's the Liberals in America who have demonized Conservative Christian Republicans, not the other way around. That's why all candidates put LIBERAL in bold in their ads and the word CONSERVATIVE never shows up in ads.

You need a reality check.

And WTF are you talking about binding us together? This is a liberal board, not a "binding" board for conservatives to join in and sing songs around the camfire.

75. I like Hitchens
So I will take that as a compliment.

The truth is, those whom most DUer's slander and hate, are not nearly as bad as all that. Just as most Democrats/peaceniks/greens are not as whacko as the Freepers say they are. The real problem lies in the fact that Freepers and DUers have grown so far apart and are so infatuated with their respective rhetoric, they have forgotten that we're all in this together and at some crucial point, we all have to check our politics at the door in order to work together and keep the world turning.

Pat yourselves on the back for your grand superiority all you want. The Freepers are doing the same over on their own forum, and it looks just as bad. The pots call the kettles black while the kettles call the pots black, and the election cycle discourse keeps spiralling to new lows.

59. IT WAS A JOKE!
Who peed in your Wheaties this morning? Seriously. While I'm certain everyone appreciates your fine, upstanding, humanistic words this morning.... Coming into an online community lecturing people on how they should act is just.. well, it's a really bad way to start out.

This thread was a joke. If you're looking for a happy, smiley, place.. where all parties are considered equal, then perhaps you can find a nice gardening forum. DU enjoys a variety of personalities on these threads... you won't agree with them all, but coming like the arbiter of good taste, as though the DUers don't get it, is certain to guarantee your failure here. Sometimes DUers go over the line, (though this thread is NOT one of them), and the other members call them on it.

Part of your urge to have everyone get along should include trying to get along here, with the DUers, before you tell us how to act.

Welcome.

How to act. Not once have I said, "I order you all to behave in such and such a manner!"

All I have done is point out how pointless it is to engage in nasty play like this. Maybe it is for jokes and fun and blowing off steam, but this is a public forum and I can't think of a better way to provide ammunition for those who would portray Democrats and liberals as mean-spirited hypocritical whackos than to engage in conversations like this. I mean, really. This is gradeschool behavior.

49. Desperation ... desperate for approval and money.
People who aren't comfortable in their own skin. When I watch the body language, I see money-grubbing predators and people-prey consumed with anxiety over "fitting in" - the too-wide smile, the closed posture, the obsequious manner, the forced laughs. White, overweight, soulless, superficial, emotionally-contorted, repressed, compliant drones.

55. Hairspray/hair gel. Pink, smug faces. No lips, esp. on the men...
On older people, the wrinkles etch a pattern of looking like a discontented sea bass, all jowls and frown lines.

The younger people all look at least ten years older than they actually are. Think "The Miss America Pageant." Again: HAIR.

I'd say wearing pastels, but that just pretty much marks you as your average August tourist. Overdressed in the August heat means you're either a Wall Street wonk (who are not *all* republicans...probably)...or an RNC delegate. Look for facial expressions of genial distaste or bewilderment.

Also listen for the politican laugh: heh-heh-heh. Very artifical looking and sounding.

58. I live near the Ray gun library
and have gone along on school field trips there. The repuke visitors are all white. The women wear pastel polyester pantsuits and the men all wear polyester pants that don't require a belt. They also wear white shoes and golf shirts. The older ones pull up in cadillacs and the younger ones in SUVs. The worst thing about them, though, isn't their appearance but their attitudes.

This morning on Washington Journal there were twin sisters - one a repuke convention delegate, the other a protester. The repuke made some truly outrageous statements about outsourcing -- how transporting jobs overseas was a good thing because it "lifts up" people in other parts of the world. She didn't give a shit about Americans and it showed. Repukes are mean-spirited and Darwinian and proud of it.

64. This is what Republicans look like!

Seriously though, Republicans are some of the tackiest people you will ever meet. The uber rich ones wear cheap suits and the women wear a nauseating amount of bling, while the PWT types look like they shop exclusively from QVC and the Kathie Lee sweatshop collection at Walmart. The men look like Bob Boudelang. And they look dreadfully out of place here. When I left the hospital last night and walked over to Times Square to catch the 2 train home, I never saw so many tacky people in my life...one woman looked like a blonde version of Roseanne and she was wearing what can only be described as what tarp would look like after a Gallagher performance. Red white and SPEW not to mention Bush/Cheney pins all over her lapel. Frightening but not as scary as the look on her face, which screamed "STICK UP MY ASS!". BTW, I'm not criticizing her for her size, because larger women can be stylin' and classy...but she just looked sloppy.

You know how to pick out tourists, right? Well, Repubs look like your typical Midwestern tourist only they look like they have poo on their upper lip and they're always sneering.

84. They are the ones desperately avoiding anyone who doesn't look like them
Which in NY, results in their having to keep their eyes glued on their pumps and crossing the street every block. They are the ones with deer in the headlights look whenever they see two men holding hands, or someone with unusual piercings or tatoos. They look like they are certainly expecting to be mugged, raped and dragged off into Central Park for some horribly unnatural activities.

You can also spot them when they are thundering in herds up the street, running from all the mice.

88. Too funny, as if any self respecting mugger would touch them..
Seriously, I went to NYC last fall for a long weekend. While standing in line to see Gypsy, a homeless black man came up asking for money. My son and I were the only ones of the dozen or so he asked to give him anything. The bleached blond 50 somethings, a group of 3 or 4 women who all looked suspiciously the same, in front of us were afraid. Like this man would attack in a line of hundreds of people. His only crime was that he was poor and black.

When did Americans become such scairdy cats?

92. We've been indoctrinated with the fear for years
Crime, terror, horrors in the night. People are terrified that the "bad guys" are lurking around every corner in wait for their particular juicy morsel. Actual crime statistics don't support this, but fear, fear, fear is great for getting people behind your program, be it hard-core law enforcement or a illegal war.

And if people are trained to see poor people as dangerous "others" they are not going to feel compassion for that person's plight, or question why this has happened to so many people.

Are republicans more afraid because they are more likely to buy the official lines, or are afraid people more likely to become republicans?
