Is the Democratic Party being redefined...again?
Tonight while watching MSNBC, Chris Matthews remarked to the lady on the panel (can't think of her name!) that they always say "Democrat" Party. "Why won't you say Democratic Party?" I started listening closely, and it's true!

Just now on another board, a poster (obviously right-wing puke):
"How did anyone come up with the name “Democratic” party as a name for the Democrat party? All political parties in the U S are supposedly democratic – except possibly the Socialist or Communist party. Call it the Democrater or Democrating or Democraty or use only the actual name – DEMOCRAT PARTY – to truly define the Democrat party. Calling it the Democratic party seems to be an attempt to disguise some of the less than democratic actions of the Democrat party."

:wtf:

So, demonizing "liberal" isn't enough? Is this something we should be watching out for and addressing before it's ingrained?

1. Republicans have been saying "Democrat Party" for decades.
Bob Dole may have been one of the first.

4. Guess I never noticed before
Do you think it's by design or unconscious error?

8. It is by design

I think I once read something online from a repuke strategist recommending the use of the word. I'll see if I can find it.

on edit:

I'm still looking, but check this google of "democrat not democratic"

The only ones pushing this meme are freeps, and they even say they are emphasising the "rat" on the end. It was decided long ago that it played well for the repuke haters, so they use it.

5. I always thought they said it, because...

it has the "rat" syllable at the end, instead of the soft "addick" syllable. Like a propaganda technique using linguistics.

These attack dogs are crazy enough to butcher the English language deliberatley (i.e. using the noun form "democrat" in place of the adjective "democratic") for political gain. Doesn't it just sound silly?

10. That would be my guess too
I'm surprised I never noticed it before Matthews pointed it out and called this lady on it. If Dole's been doing it for quite some time, it confirms the mean-spiritedness for me.

I guess I'll just have to make it a habit to casually pronounce it 'RepubliCON' from now on.

6. Poor grammar
is a characteristic of right wing nut cases, hence "Democrat Party" instead of "the Democrats". Poor fools.

7. It was founded by Thomas Jefferson
As the Democratic-Republican Party in 1798.

The name was simplified to the Democratic Party in 1844.

It has NEVER, NEVER, NEVER been the Democrat party.

It is the repukes that started calling us that.

As if it needs to be said, this idiot has made a complete fool of himself.

Check this link:

http://www.democrats.org/about/history.html

It gives a history of the Democratic Party.

Of course it's from Democrats, so he will probaly say it's all made up, but ask him to come up with an unbaised source showing the history of the "Democrat" Party. I'd love to see it.

You might want to review this:

It goes back to at least McCarthy.

I hope you can still respond to that winger that insists that our party was called the democrat party.

I'd like to see what they say.

More insight? From Newsmax of all places! It does go real negative on Clinton, but it is relevant here:
