John McCain's explanation of why we were attacked on Sept. 11, 2001
"we were attacked not for a wrong we had done, but for who we are — a people united in a kinship of ideals, committed to the notion that the people are sovereign, not governments, not armies, not a pitiless, inhumane theocracy, not kings, mullahs or tyrants, but the people."

Can we finally put to rest the notion that John McCain is honest?

He knows we weren't attacked because of kinship.

1. He's honest when it suits him
And sometimes that's kinda delicious, being such a rarity on the Rightwing side of things. But you're absolutely right.

2. Then why did we sell arms to *Hussein?
When he was "worse than Hitler".
*insert numerous other dictators' names.
Just stating the obvious.

3. I am losing respect for him each and every moment that passes.
I have to say.....of all the repugs out there... I thought he was at least a straight shooter. But for him to continue to embrace * as he has and to read statements such as your post, he is going downhill fast. Thanks for the information.

5. I think you're right. We are witnessing a man crumble
before our very eyes, losing all respectability and glory all for a man who thinks he's not worthy of shining his shoes. I really think Bush probably thinks McCain is a total dumbshit for even going to Viet Nam, and the same for Kerry.

10. I have never heard him demand an apology from the bushies for
what they did to him - AND - to the innocent non-combatants IN HIS OWN IMMEDIATE FAMILY. When they attacked him in South Carolina in 2000, they not only impugned his character and integrity, but they also hit his wife and their adopted daughter. She's from Bangladesh, I believe, and her skin's color is deeper. So what'd they do? rove called around to a bunch of shock jocks all over the state, suggesting they start a whispering campaign on the air about John McCain supposedly having fathered a black child out of wedlock. There were "pollsters" who'd call people and say "would you vote for John McCain if you knew that he'd fathered a black child out of wedlock?" Now, I suppose you can phrase it as a question and not be completely out of bounds, legally. But SHIT. They thereby take a smack not just at McCain himself, but at HIS MARRIAGE, and thereby also at HIS WIFE, and directly, thanks to that lovely "black child out of wedlock" smear, HIS ADOPTED DAUGHTER.

I have not only never heard him demand an apology or denunciation from the bushies for that, but I have NEVER heard him spent a split second defending his wife, their daughter, and their marriage, or express an instant's worth of outrage. Coming back, four years later, and saying nothing more than "he did the same thing to me in 2000" (referring to the Swifties' smear against Kerry) doesn't cut it. Doesn't even BEGIN to cut it. If I were McCain's wife, I'd be pissed to hell, to this day, that he didn't fight harder to defend my honor and that of our innocent child - WHO WAS NEVER THE ISSUE. Instead he caves completely to bush and publicly, physically embraces him - damn near mauls him onstage.

I, too, have lost respect for McCain. Oh yeah - and if that's not priceless, on MSNBC tonight, Chris Matthews asked him about his Michael Moore remarks and he carried on about how horrible it was for Michael Moore to portray Iraq as some sort of paradise in "Fahrenheit 9/11." Then Matthews asks - did you see the movie? What does McCain say? NO. He HASN'T seen it. He's seen clips, so that's enough. Later in that interview he also said he'd seen 10 hours worth of clips on MSNBC. Hey, IDIOT, there weren't 10 hours worth of MOVIE in "F9/11." Even more scathing, Matthews then went on to describe how little a part of the movie that portion was, and how it mostly showed how the little guy's kids get stuck fighting the war while the rest of us sit and the fat-cats pull strings to keep their own kids out of danger (I kept wondering how soon Rudy Giuliani intends to send his son, Andrew, off to Iraq. Young Andrew must be close to military service age by now, isn't he?). THEN, astoundingly, McCain proceeds to talk about how he thinks Michael Moore is right on this. Used the word "right" to denote "correct." My husband sat there and said - "uh, John, do you realize you're now proclaiming that Michael Moore is correct and you agree with him?"

McCain could be a towering example. Feh!

And besides, he's anti-choice anyway, so fuck him.

4. McCain also used Saddam's "torture chambers" as a justificiation,
as if we aren't torturing Iraqis.

My reaction to his speech is here:

14. Hm, the GOP is the exact opposite of that
The GOP doesn't WANT a people united in a kinship of ideals -- why else would they fund hate mongers throughout the country like Hannity and Colter --

The GOP is NOT committed to the notion that the people are sovereign, not governments, not armies, not a pitiless, inhumane theocracy, not kings, mullahs or tyrants, but the people -- they WANT a theocracy in the United States, and they WANT a totalitarian republican government, they WANT to crush dissent and they WANT their king in power forever.

What a bunch of liars.

Trying to shove the dead myth of American down our throats.

They have killed America and turned it into a myth. We no longer have democracy, our votes no longer count, elections are a sham, we are no longer free, we are being watched constantly, and they have taken over our formerly free press and now shove their propaganda down our throats and get paid to do it.

America has become a WWF parody of what it used to be.

This caricature of America is about as real as a WWF match.

The rest of the world knows its fake.

Why don't we?

15. Saigon/Stockholm Syndrome?
Has he been kept so long by his jailers that he now sympathizes with them?

A couple weeks ago I speculated that McCain is playing this game to position himself to pick up the pieces of the GOOP when it crashes and burns in November. And I still hold to that belief. If anything, I'm more convinced as he's playing both sides...promised a plum job (Sec. Of State???) in the next regime or being the "loyal" party man riding to rescue the GOOP from the wingnuts.

The bastard's an opportunist...looking for what's best for him NOT the country. By not defending attacks on Kerry he dishonored all who fought in that war and undercut his own detention that would have gone on a hell of a lot longer had Mr. Kerry and others not testified in front of Congress and Nixon was forced into negotiating a final "out" for American forces (and that's all Nixon did in '73) that led to McCain's release.

He's now totally discredited with anyone but the GOOP. Goldwater would have kicked his ass!

wear a black arm band because his country was occupied and many innocent people were being killed...and the other one who said if he wasn't playing he would be in the resistance...

Iraq who had nothing to do with 911

18. Bottom line, if McCain is going to whore for the GOP and shrubya, he
should really go whole hog and do it right. He should have given his speech in the buff, except for a ball cap and a G-string imprinted with the W/04 logo. That seems about right.
