Anyone else but me find the "W" bumper stickers kind of chilling?
In a "cult of the personality" kind of way?

1. I see them as "I support him kinda, but not ready to commit...
... to a full blown bumper sticker."

5. It's almost like they're afraid...
Edited on Tue Aug-31-04 12:07 AM by GainesT1958
To put the full "Bush/ go Cheney yourself '04" one on their big-a$$ed SUVs...

My lovely wife helped me find the solution last week. She suggested that I go buy one of those red magic markers that wash off. That way I could go around to any "W" sticker I happened to see in a parking lot, and put the international slash symbol on it. A series of rains would wash it off, making it impossible for the Repubs owning it to suggest that I subverted their freedom of speech with my addition to their sticker. Later, I could just "slash" it again, and so on throughout the fall.

I'm looking foward to making my first "Slash Hit" on the next "W" sticker I come across!:D

B-)

26. Cut the pretense, use a red Sharpie instead!
Just make sure there are no video cameras in the vicinity to record you performing your deed!!!

18. 1972 was a very scary year
I'll never forget the "Nixon Youth" dancing and singing up on the stage at the Convention.

It was just downright creepy.

7. Yes quite a cult of personality thing. But it is quite revealing as well.
Edited on Tue Aug-31-04 12:10 AM by benfranklin1776
It is an outgrowth of the same mania that gave birth to the creepy W signs at rallies. What it shows though is that they are ashamed to be seen in public with their ticket. We proudly display Kerry Edwards whereas they hide their pathetic Dick. I think they are ashamed of him, and rightfully so!

9. Sort of like the North Koreans and their 'dear leader'
or ... and I know this is very obvious to anyone paying attention ... but this whole mess invokes Orwell, 1984 and Big Brother.

Flash to crowds shrieking "Long Live Big Brother!"
it's becoming easier and easier to picture crowds shrieking "Long Live Dubya!"
Do you find it hard to imagine giant posters of Bush in heroic poses on the sides of a jillion big buildings like the Chinese used to do with Mao?

Sorry. I am drenched in this dark fantasy tonight.

10. Both Parties Live Orwellian
I laugh everytime I hear when someone says "when are we gonna get back to the issues". The assumption was there were issues being discussed in the first place. It's a time where nuance and what you meant as opposed to what you say as meaning more. It's where image trumps context and lies circle the globe before the truth gets its pants on.

Repugnicans know that surface makes people feel good. Tell 'em their taxes are gonna be cut, just don't tell them it's a lie or it's only for the richest and the rest either have to pay more taxes or go without services. They like to pretend they're "defending the country" by wrapping up in a flag, but few ever served and now gleeful exploit the damage of Vietnam and tearing apart the military.

Shameful, but there's a segment in all society that can't nuance, aren't interested in thinking for themselves and need the certainty of a draconian religion or government to "protect them".

12. I haven't seen the W bumper stickers, but I was chilled
tonight when I heard Craig Crawford mention that the whole strategy of the election (from Rove) was, in essence (tho not Crawford's words) a cult of personality campaign -- that is, emphasize his personality not issues or anything else.

It's not like the one I saw today here in Oakland, California; although similar. I don't know what it is. . .way back before he was appointed pResident, just seeing * face on TV was enough to make me start throwing things at it. I stopped watching TV altogether after 2000 in part because it was making my blood pressure go through the roof.

Now I'm having a similar reaction every time I see a * /Cheney bumper sticker. Haven't seen THAT many, but a few, and each time I do, I find myself quite irritated.

I really do wish some little green men would BEAM HIM UP!

EDIT TO ADD:

I know what it is: The "W" has that "super man" "S" quality about it AND, as if that weren't bad enough, there is a hint, vague for sure but a HINT, nonetheless, of SWASTICA! :scared:

14. I see more Kerry/Edwards stickers in my
corner of So. Calif. on the LA/Ventura County Line. Personally I think you'd have to be "off your nut," as my dad would say, to publically proclaim support for the most hated person on the planet. A "W" sticker is a sure sign of an ignorant, deluded fool.

20. What's Creepier....
....usually when I see B/C crap on cars, there's always another sticker nearby with the subliminal message of, "You're either for us or against us." Case in point: Saw a car last night with a W sticker above another that said, "God Bless America -- AMERICANS UNITE!"

What...and the rest of you get the hell out?

22. Yes! I've seen a few of those around LA and I do find them creepy.
But I saw the best one the other day which I haven't seen mentioned here. It said VOTE NOW. It took me a minute before it sank in. The stickers with just the "W" though are creepy because it makes it look like a little secret inside club.

33. Not so much chilling,
but annoying in a yuppie sort of way. They are usually on expensive cars, so the effect is, "Here's my political bumpersticker, but a full on bumper sticker is far too gauche."

But then again, this is Massachusetts, where lots of people have "ACK" and "MV" or even "OBX" in those circle stickers.

34. The red-white-and-blue numbers?
I've seen them around. They're huge and there are a lot of them, almost as if someone is distributing them. I think they're magnetic because I always see them on the body of cars rather than on the bumper. Perhaps we could come up with our own magnetic stickers to place next to them. I suggest one that says "armonger".
