1. wait until after the convention
we have the issues on our side:

1. jobs, incentive for companies to keep jobs here instead of tax breaks if they offshore jobs
2. health care
3. prescription drug plan, where safe cheap drugs can be brought over from Canada
4. Unify the country and the world. bush done everything to divide the world and the country
5. stem cell research
6. a woman's right to choose
7. supreme court justices
8. civil rights
9. environment
10 education

and much much more

But who is going to yell from the bleachers?
I have not heard anything from the dems. Nothing.

Until Kerry comes out swinging, the country will view him as weak an ineffectual.

John Kerry, if you're out there reading this, wake the fuck up!!

If you don't start swinging against the neocon machine, you're going to fucking lose!!!!

30. Anything that Kerry would say right now
..can easily be answered to at the RNC. Right now they have the national stage. I think John and the dems are smart to lay low at this time.
I know that I was pissed when Gore and the dems kept quiet last election, but I have a feeling it is different this time.
After the RNC things should change. If they don't then I might start wondering what is going on, but until then I will kick back and wait a few weeks.

57. The problem is that the press
NPR included, is focusing in on nothing but terrA terra terra. The press is making this a one issue election based on terra. MonkeyHead is the World Savior from Terra. Iraq was invaded because of terra. Its the only issue that the Reich Wing can win on

So why is it all terra all the time? MonkeyHead polls high there and they have to give him all the help they can.

5. Calm down
And please. Let's end the desperate postings. It's way too soon to be scared about Bush winning. It's their convention week, for geez sake. Of course, they're pulling all the stops out. Turn off your darn TV until next Monday. There isn't anything we can do about what we're seeing this week on TV so TURN IT OFF. Take a week off from this race, do other things and then get back to business next week WHEN THE REAL CAMPAIGN BEGINS.

6. Read this
http://www.emergingdemocraticmajorityweblog.com/donkeyrising/archives/000624.php

An excerpt:

So where does that leave us? In my view, about where we were before the Democratic convention. In fact--in addition to the horse race--if you look at Kerry-Bush comparisons on issues and on personal characteristics, the results of a number of polls seem almost to replicate the results of that particular poll prior to the Democratic convention.

And another critical thing hasn't changed at all--Bush's ratings in all his vulnerable areas (the economy, Iraq, health care, etc.), as well as voters' sense of whether the country is going in the right direction and whether a different direction is needed. These indicators have all continued to be quite negative (in some cases, have actually worsened) over the course of August, including the period allegedly affected by the SBVT controversy.

This is Bush's problem. He's got to run on something and, unfortunately for him, he has precious little to run on other than being the president of 9/11. The SBVT ads and subsequent media feeding frenzy didn't change that equation in the slightest--and it's not an equation that favors Bush's re-election.

Edited on Tue Aug-31-04 09:48 AM by Dhalgren
Bush will lose the election, there is very little doubt about that; but will he retain the WH? That's the question. And the answer is, probably, yes. The idea that bush and the republicans will just look at the voting results and say, "Oh well, looks like they beat us. I guess we'll just all go home", is hard to even contemplate. Personally, I can't see Bush giving up the WH. I think he will do anything - anything - to keep power.

Now this next part is my 80 year old mother's statement. And she's as level headed as anyone I've ever known. Every time we speak, I repeat how worried I am that the idiot could get in office again. Just think of the Supreme Court appointments, I say. But she keeps repeating that the best thing that could happen is to have him in again. Then the country would finally wake up.

I know, and it must be genetic, just listening to these arrogant assholes, is like hearing fingernails on a chalkboard. But I don't see any other way of finding a positive in this.

If it helps, I don't think the real hard hits have even begun yet. Kerry better not get Gored, or he's in for big trouble. I think we'd literally tear him to pieces.

If Kerry wants to win, he's gonna have to take the gloves off. It's just that simple. The momentum is with the fascists right now, who are portraying themselves to the deluded portion of America that they are just regular guys who hate war, love gays, etc etc etc .

Goddess knows there is more than enough ammunition to throw at Bush for all his fuck ups. If Kerry doesn't start and start SOON, then he will lose.

Kerry's campaign needs to get in gear. They are not attacking and there is PLENTY of ammunitition. Playing "nice" with repukes will not work. I've sent money, talked to voters and will drive voters to the polls on election day, taking the day off work.

...they sure as hell can't talk about their creation of jobs, the roaring economy, the balanced budget, their outstanding foreign policy, their (ironic to say the least) great success on the war on terror, soldiers not coming home in body bags, etc. etc. etc.

On the bright side, thanks to B*'s flaming incompetence, many more people are actually paying attention to politics than they used to. Maybe your average repub voter may now actually know who their state senators and congressional representatives are now. Nah, that may be asking a little too much there...

42. There's nothing wrong with having to feel reassured at times
It's an ugly, hard, nasty race and it's taking FOREVER. It's easy to get discouraged. I was feeling the way you're feeling now a few weeks ago so I had to turn off the television for a few days, let the emotion of it all die down, then look at the situation realistically.

If Bush thought he had it in the bag, then I don't think the Swiftboat crap would have ever surfaced. Things like this seem like a Rovian contingency plan for when the Bush campaign starts to drown.

Given the media bias, given the SBV, given the fact that Bush is the incumbent, his numbers are still too low. The debates will work in our favor too. Hang in there.

I was feeling just like you last week after an especially downer conversation with my mom. Someone recommended I volunteer at my local dem headquarters. I hemmed & hawed, but finally stopped by & they were THRILLED to have me! I don't have lots of time, but I am getting started this week & will be taking election day off to be available to drive people to the polls, etc. I FEEL MUCH, MUCH BETTER since doing this!!! 48. Their bright idea so far was Bandaid Boy mocking woudned soldiers
and now they're having to shut down and explaining they had nothing to do with it, nothing to do with what happened at their own convention....

They're also having to run around today explaining that when pResident Fucknut said "I don't think we can win the war on terror" of course, he didn't mean we can't win the war on terror. I mean, why would you think THAT, just because HE SAID IT?

Their big "stroke of genius" so far have been the slime boatters, and now they're running around explaining they had nothing to do with it, nothing to do with all these folks they've got documented ties to.

Before that, the big "stroke of genius" was dressing Junior Birdman up in a costume and putting him in front of a sign that said Mission Impossible er, Accomplished. Remember how well THAT'S worked out?

51. The electoral college looks good.......but
This is going to be a nail biter....no 2 ways about it.

Keep in mind the media is generally portraying the whole thing as very close....and they will no doubt keep you on the edge of your seat till the very end. In general, you won't be able to turn to the media for truth in what's really going on. The polls nowadays pretty much suck.

If you're worried recently concerning Swift Boat...I just have to believe in people as not being dumb enough to buy into the crap...and given time people will realize how off the wall the whole thing is.

Here's the worse case scenarios to look for:

1. Rumsfeld disappears in Iraq and suddenly they find WMD. A prediction recently made on the McLaughlin show this past Sunday.

2. A staged terrorist attack of some sorts. I've never gotten over the fact that the anthrax which was spread after 911 was probably a home grown plot. Studies showed it was US grade stuff.

3. The election itself - numerous theories abound about how easy it is for some knucklehead to fiddle with and literally tweak the election results so that Bush wins in key states.

You have all sorts of operatives and sleazy connections and all it takes is one of these screwballs to get propped up to initiate something.

Don't put anything past these people. Consider what's at stake. There is the permanency of the tax breaks together with FUTURE breaks that will make what's happened so far look like a walk in the part....so we're talking about literally trillions of dollars long term which have the potential to be shifted around.

59. Here's where I see the race going.
First, remember something:
Most modern polling methods only survey those who have voted in past elections; this skews the sample conservatively, which was easily demonstrated in 2000 when Gore was behind in almost all national polls by several points and then went on to win the popular vote.

Right now, I see Kerry winning all of the Gore states. Even Wisconsin, which seems to be tied right now. Undecideds will push the close Gore states over to our side, as will repentant Nader voters and brand new voters.

Next, Kerry will drag New Hampshire back to our side - Kerry has been leading there consistently, and his GOTV troops are scouring the state like crazy. That's 4EVs to our total, bringing us to 264EVs.

Kerry then has to win just 6EVs from any of the following states:
Colorado (9EVs)
Nevada (5EVs)
Arizona (10EVs)
Missouri (11EVs)
Arkansas (6EVs)
Ohio (20EVs)
Tennessee (11EVs)
Virginia (12EVs)
West Virginia (5EVs)
North Carolina (15EVs)
Florida (27EVs)

Notice something? All of these states are states that Bush carried in 2000. Most of them are states that Bush easily carried in 2000, which means that he's lost some serious ground in his base. While in 2000 he was able to take many of these states for granted and target blue states, he'll be wasting precious time this year trying to bring his base back. Senator Kerry, in contrast, has most of his base lined-up. Sure, his leads may be only 5% or so, but they're fairly consistent.

Another point of confidence:
I don't recall who did the poll, but the percentage of Democrats who said that they are "excited" about voting in November this year is twice that of those who answered affirmatively to the same question in 2000. The intensity on our side is truly palpable. Our GOTV operations will add to this intensity; if we manage to maintain this intensity, I don't see it as unrealistic to maintain hope for a victory.

Another point:
Sadly, that 1000th US GI is going to make the news. And the media will have another field day with it. Bush will lose bounce over it.
Then, another media event will come in October: the DVD release of F9/11. Liberals will rent and buy it and show it to their moderate and conservative friends. Even if it makes a 1 or 2% difference, that could be all of the difference in the world. Hell, the movie will at the very least serve to keep-up the high intensity on our side.

It's still a while to go. Not even Labor Day yet. Most people aren't paying attention. Chimp's fundamentals are crapola. And Kerry's a pretty good debater. We're still very much in this race. I know that it's fashionable to bash those express doubts around here, but I'll affirm you: it's fine to be concerned, so long as it doesn't consume your desire to work at ridding the country of that damn Chimp.

64. Do you really think it matters?
Bushco will do ANYTHING they can to stay in power. Whether it be another terrorists attack days before the election, a fraudulant voting system, suspending the elections because of a terrorist threat...whatever it takes they will do.

65. I personally don't know anyone who is definitely going to vote for Bush.
I know two who might, just maybe...

I know one serious pro-lifer who hates Bush with a passion.

Many of the republicans I know are disgusted by Bush.

Don't listen to Faux.

Don't pay much attention to the polls. Poll questions can influence poll takers; the results can be spun.

He didn't win in 2000, anyway.

And the only way he can take this election is with more of the same fraud.

66. I know some, but they are wavering, looking for
an excuse not to.

67. It's convention week. Don't worry about it
If there is any bounce from this, it will go right back down in a matter of a week or two, or as soon as everyone watches that wonderful Zell Miller and his little fight with Matthews.
