This election is not as important as you think.

If Bush wins - the pukes will continue their crusade to destroy all vestiges of liberal thought and ideology in America. They will use their control of congress to shut down government programs, environmental protections and civil rights for those who don't fit their definition of American. They will continue to do everything in their power to turn America into a Bible-thumping theocracy where the poor and minorities and the working class are on their own.

Do you remember those Jane Goodall videos where a couple of males band together and proceed to terrorize the whole troop? They only stop after every other chimp has been thoroughly pounded on, threatened and humiliated and made to pay respect to the bullies.

Well, we're not so different from Jane's chimps. I think that's what she was trying to tell us. The pukes are on a rampage, and until we liberals are thoroughly humiliated they will continue destroying all forms of civility in our government. And it's highly unlikely that our democracy will survive if they get away with it - IMO.

Added on edit - " . . if they get away with it".

2. Just what we need. Negative reinforcement.
Another powerful don't get out the vote message. I thought we weren't supposed to go negative about Kerry on this board during the campaign.

3. it's a referendum on Bush's radical policies
it answers the question, do people approve of Bush's radical policies?

I don't see how that can be seen as unimportant.

4. That's your opinion.
My opinion is that the liberals can kick some ass too. If they want a fight, THEY GOT ONE. Most of the so-called conservatives I see are pasty little wimps who couldn't bash their way out of a wet paper bag. That's why so many republicans have avoided military and/or combat service.

5. Wrong
You neglect the awesome power of the huge executive branch, not to mention the power the President holds over the courts (via appointment).

Why did you leave that out?

Why did you leave out that if Kerry does not win, we will be powerless to stop the GOP crusade?

20. Right
Ask any prison inmate whether a minority with the right utensiles of power can control the lives of a vastly greater majority. If the shrub has shown us anything in the last four years, it's that our cherished system of checks and balances is much weaker, and our resultant vulnerability to dictatorship much greater, than ever we had feared in our worst nightmares.

If you are a person of color, poor, or a citizen of the third world, Kerry's .01% difference from Bush will make a huge difference in your life.

7. THe USA was better under Clinton
Sure the Republicans were a pain in the ass and the government was not perfect - but it was a hell of a lot better.

Veto power is worth quite a bit.

8. Proves a point
That Kerry needs a Democratic Congress.

Make no mistake, the war against President Kerry will begin on November 3. A Democratic Congress will go a long, long way towards disabling sich an effort.

My purpose was not to sound defeatist, which is how it came out. I apologize for that and made a correction to that original post. But I do want to show how important the whole battle is - not just this one election.

A similar thing happened prior to the civil war. The south became enraged and were willing to destroy the union rather than accept liberal limitations on their right to own slaves. Not that many southerners owned slaves - but they incited the rest with talk of destroying their "way of life" the code word of the day. That way of life included keeping the slaves under complete domination of even the poorest white person.

I think we're in a very similar situation right now. And it may take another civil war to set things right. There are people in the south today who believe this - and who believe that the south will win this time and that the US will become that right-wing minority-hating theocracy they yearn for so much.

That's the battle we need to keep in mind.

12. That's why doing everything we
can to get a Kerry win is only the first step. The Repukes aren't going to go down easy and what was done to Clinton will look like a cakewalk. There is no stopping in this fight we got many years ahead to keep at it. I truly hope that there will be some convictions, some real jail time served by many in this administration and it isn't out of vindictiveness we have to make a point that there are consequences for what they are doing.

14. If Democrats win back the Senate, and maybe the House too,
watch the independent investigations spring up. Watch the indictments follow. The media will follow too. And so will the Republicans in Congress; they won't have a choice if they want to save their own positions.

B*'s supporters are not equally strong in their feelings. Some pro-B* voters believe in a strong opposition party in Congress and will vote accordingly. Many voters of all persuasions still believe in separation of powers and checks and balances.

So instead of saying that we're screwed regardless of Kerry or B*, one can argue that we're going to save this republic regardless of who is in the Oval Office. The Republicans are divided, and excesses at the top will only deepen their divisions. They won't be able to deliver to the most fanatical minority without alienating the mainstream party faithful. The Democrats may finally shake off the right-wing influence of the DLC whether Kerry wins or not. A major political realignment is likely under way.

All isn't lost. Hang in there. As the saying goes, things are always darkest before the dawn.

In case anyone's looking for something better to do with your TV this week, it's called "Sherman's March".

And it's not anything like you'd imagine. Among other things it shows very vividly the world-view of many white southerners today - as seen through the eyes of several young, beautuful, unmarried southern women.

I found it very compelling.

PS You probabaly won't find it at any video stores. I got it online through www.netflix.com

What? I'm just a stupid, blind "ABB" Democrat, break it down for me, please?

And BTW, we're not a tribe of chimps. the Chimp is in the Oval Office and needs to leave.

19. Well that depends upon our own popular movement, doesn't it?
It seems to me that you need a popular movement to counter a popular movement, something that does not get re-elected every 4 years.

22. And I don't think Kerry plans to change anything fundamentally
Listening to his ideas, he's looking for "loopholes" that don't fundamentally alter the destructive systems we have in place. Until he takes on the healthcare system directly, the WTO directly, etc., there can be no true and lasting change. Either he isn't prepared to do that or he's keeping things hush hush for now.

I was only pointing out that this is just a battle in a much larger war. A war that is going on in England too. The western world is undergoing a Reformation - much like the Calvanist revolution that started in England, centuries ago. That resulted in terrible persecution of those who opposed it.

And for the same fundamental psychological reasons - reasons that have more to do with what will happen in the next few years than who wins this election.

In no way do I think this election is unimportant. But many here seem to believe that if Kerry wins then liberals will become the rightful leaders of America again and we'll all live happily ever after. There will be a whole war still to fight. Even if Kerry wins this battle I'm not sure we will win that larger war.

If we do lose that big one, one reason will be because people on the left thought that this election was all there was to it - and never saw it as part of a larger war.

If Bush wins, they will get away with it. If Kerry wins, there's hope that they can be stopped.
