A two-sentence paragraph from Mr. Garrison Keillor. Says it all..
"The party of Lincoln and Liberty was transmogrified into the party of hairy-backed swamp developers and corporate shills, faith-based economists, fundamentalist bullies with Bibles, Christians of convenience, freelance racists, misanthropic frat boys, shrieking midgets of AM radio, tax cheats, nihilists in golf pants, brownshirts in pinstripes, sweatshop tycoons, hacks, fakirs, aggressive dorks, Lamborghini libertarians, people who believe Neil Armstrong’s moonwalk was filmed in Roswell, New Mexico, little honkers out to diminish the rest of us, Newt’s evil spawn and their Etch-A-Sketch president, a dull and rigid man suspicious of the free flow of information and of secular institutions, whose philosophy is a jumble of badly sutured body parts trying to walk. Republicans: The No.1 reason the rest of the world thinks we’re deaf, dumb and dangerous."

From this AMAZING piece: http://www.inthesetimes.com/site/main/article/979

Wow!! What a guy! And the last paragraph, quite the kicker:

Dante said that the hottest place in Hell is reserved for those who in time of crisis remain neutral, so I have spoken my piece, and thank you, dear reader. It’s a beautiful world, rain or shine, and there is more to life than winning.

3. How about Garrison Paul or
Paul Garrison (Paul for Wellstone, of course!)? If I were naming a son right now, I think I'd name him Paul Michael Wellstone Garrison! (Good thing I DON'T have one to name now, huh?)

6. We're skipping the middle name.
His last name will be my name and my husband's name hyphenated, so that's plenty of names right there. Although we did think about Paul for a while, as I lost a friend named Paul this year.

5. A lot of us should go out and buy Keillor's tapes from the book store.
I have a couple. I think I'll go buy some more just to show my appreciation for his speaking out.

7. That is awesome!
My Repug dad LOVED Garrison Keillor and had all of his tapes a while back. My dad and I can no longer talk politics without him calling me a whacked out liberal. It has definitely strained our relationship. Dare I send this to him!?!?! No, out of respect, I'll not do it. Hope he sees it though!

14. That is an awesome riff. Reminds me of the scene in "Do the Right Thing"
where the various characters go through their litany of racial stereotypes. Totally awesome. Makes me want to go by the DVD now.

16. Grr....An Etch-A-Sketch is supposed to be "Fun for everyone!"
Not bloody likely.

On the positive side of the analogy, the images are two-dimensional and everything is in black and white.

18. Beautiful
I wish he'd read it aloud on NPR (especially the phrase "Hypocrisies shine like cat turds in the moonlight!" don't ask me why...) Also kudos to Sally McCoy, who in the reader response section posted: "What a great call to arms. 2000 was an awful mistake.  Time for a war on error."

21. This is from his book "Homegrown Democrat"...
I have never read any of his stuff before...though I have been tempted, but I couldn't resist picking his latest one up. And boy am I glad I did. It is a product of sheer majesty. It neatly, pointedly and politely explains why the vast majority of us on the left are right and the majority of those on the right are wrong.

There are a few laugh out loud passages (his advice to Tucker Carlson is PRICELESS!!) and alot of food for thought.

I will be buying more of his stuff as soon as the rent check clears.

I HIGHLY recommend you pick it up. This is a book you will be talking about for quite some time.

23. Another vote for 'Homegrown Democrat'
I read it cover to cover in one sitting. Admittedly, it's not very long, but that's still a lot of polemic to read in one sitting and it kept me cheering for the whole time. I bought several more copies and gave them as gifts to friends, relatives and coworkers.

He's also been more overtly political on 'Prairie Home Companion' then has sometimes been the case. His 'Presidential Blues Off' skit was priceless.

22. Great article by Keillor...but he forgot that soulless, worthless suit...
Edited on Wed Sep-01-04 12:10 PM by terrya
who took the place of the magnificent Paul Wellstone as Senator from Minnesota.

And THAT is part of the Republican Party today. Opportunistic nonentities with no core principles flip-flopping to advance their political careers.
