RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Republicans tonight selected Norfolk delegate Thelma Drake to replace congressman Edward Schrock on the ballot for the November second election. Drake is a real estate agent. The selection was made at a hastily called meeting of the Second Congressional District Republican Committee.
It comes one day after Schrock stunned the party with the abrupt announcement that he will run against Democratic lawyer David Ashe. The 63-year-old Schrock cited unspecified allegations in announcing yesterday that he will not seek a third term. A Web log has published claims since August 19th that Schrock solicited for sex with another man on a gay telephone dating service.
Schrock has been an outspoken opponent of gays in the military and a supporter of a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriages. He did not address the allegation in a brief statement announcing his retirement and said he would not comment further.
