A lot of things will happen in the next few days
Al Hunt commenting in the Wall Street Journal, indicated from a source that a major strategy change will be taking place in the Kerry campaign

At the same time Kerry is about to launch 45 million dollars worth of TV ads in twenty states:

3. My thoughts
Political races always have their ebb and flow. A candidate's popularity will go up and down during the campaign. The trick is to avoid peaking early (that's what killed the Dean campaign), and to try and time your zenith right on election day. In other words, timing is everything in politics.

Kerry may indeed be waiting a while before really starting his serious campaigning. Certainly, it doesn't make sense to expend any political ammunition during the week-long mutual masturbation session the press is having with its GOP masters during the RNC. And it is way too early for any heavy ammunition, as its effect would be a dim memory by election day. They didn't coin the phrase, "October surprise" for nothing.

This campaign won't really start until after Labor Day. It's always been that way. Everything up 'til now is mostly practice.

I think this ad buy of Kerry's as well as some shifting in his strategy presages the real campaign. Kerry has been through this (campaigning) before, so he knows what he's doing.

Of course, all this assumes he really wants to win, and isn't merely a willing pawn in a GOP conspiracy to throw the election to Bush, and to "make it look good." Given the moribund behavior of democrats in congress the last four years, anything is possible. But I can't bring myself to really believe this is the case.

It will be interesting indeed to see what's in the news in a couple of weeks.
