Number of U.S. troops wounded in Iraq nears 7,000

The Associated Press
Published Tuesday, August 31st, 2004

WASHINGTON (AP) - The number of American troops wounded in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003 is approaching 7,000, according to figures published Tuesday by the Pentagon. The death toll for U.S. military personnel is 975, plus three Defense Department civilians.

The wounded total has approximately doubled since mid-April, when casualties and deaths mounted rapidly as the insurgency intensified. The death toll over that period has grown by about 300.

The Pentagon, which generally updates its casualty count each week, said the number of wounded stands at 6,916, up 226 from a week earlier. In the two months since the United States handed over political sovereignty to an interim Iraq government, the wounded total has grown by about 1,500.

The vast majority of casualties have been Marines and Army soldiers, although the Pentagon announced on Tuesday the 13th member of the Air Force to die in Iraq. Airman 1st Class Carl L. Anderson Jr., 21, of Georgetown, S.C., was killed by a roadside bomb on Sunday near the northern city of Mosul. He was assigned to the 3rd Logistics Readiness Squadron based at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska.

8. Oh come on! 7,000 wounded?
Bob Dole hasn't seen any of them. How could they possibly exist, unless Bob Dole puts his finger in the bullet wound or puts his hand on the stump where the leg used to be? Unless Bob Dole certifies it, it didn't happen. Understand?

11. do you think the military is holding back reports on deaths? I DO
bushies dont want the 1000 mark to interrupt their convention, I saw a report recently about a family who heard from the buddy if a slain soldier in Iraq who called to express his condolences, three days after they should have been notified, look for a spike in the next few weeks after the convention

4. NYT reported yesterday attacks on US soldiers up 20% since hand-over --
Noted no weakening in insurgency, continuing lack of public services, stalled rebuilding, etc.

6. 22 away from 1000
OFFICIALLY. I think the true number would stagger us, but back to the subject. At the rate of two per day we'll hit the 1000 mark on 11 Sept. when the repukes will be busy politicizing the attacks on NYC. We'll be distracted and diverted, and when we look up there'll be another 100 dead Americans.

12. How fitting: hitting 1000 on 9/11
Actually, this month the rate was slightly more than 2 per day, so we might hit 1000 a few days before 9/11.

Who here wants to bet that, if we hit 1000 on 9/11, Bush will try to spin it as "brave troops fighting to protect us from another 9/11" or some other such bullshit?

7. Doesn't this mean the insurgents are getting desperate?
Didn't Rumfilled say that about a year ago, that the deaths and maimings were a good sign?

BTW, where is Rumfilled these days? I miss his swaggering nazi attitude.

13. Hasn't been top-story-worthy in the right-wing media, that's for sure...
Earlier in the year, at least we were getting heartbreaking stories about GIs being killed two or three per day, etc.

But 66 killed in August alone? That's more than two GIs killed/day, and it's twide the tragedy that this has been such a neglected story.
