I posted most of this earlier but took into account a few suggestions from DUers and changed it up a bit. So FWIW here is the "letter to the editor" I just mailed to my local rag.
George W. Bush and his Republican minions have a proven record of hostility to America’s military. In the 2000 Republican primary, the Bush campaign went as far as to question Bush’s opponent Senator John McCain’s sanity due to his days spent as a Prisoner of War. In 2002, the Republicans ran ads against Senator Max Cleland, Vietnam veteran and triple amputee, comparing him to Osama bin Laden because he opposed Bush’s anti-union version of a Homeland Security Department. In office, Bush has proved his lack of concern for those who serve our country by sending them to war on false premises, with little allied support or an exit strategy, and not servicing our troops with adequate equipment and provisions. He also has a shameful record of cutting veterans benefits, particularly their health benefits. Bush failed to specifically condemn the false claims of the so-called Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, a group with numerous ties to his campaign who maliciously attacked the military record of war hero Senator John Kerry. At the Republican convention, hundreds of attendees have been wearing Band-Aids with tiny purple hearts on them, mocking Kerry’s service. How does it show support for our military to question the awarding of medals like the Purple Heart in such a manner?
Our active military and veterans are a diverse group and will support the candidate of their choice for different reasons, but Bush’s own record lays to rest the myth that he supports our military.
