Holding Center Called 'Inhumane'
By N.J. Burkett
(New York-WABC, September 1, 2004) — Nearly 1,800 protestors have been arrested and taken to a make-shift jail. Now they're protesting the conditions at that jail. Can hundreds of demonstrators be wrong? That is question here.
The mayor of New York City said on Wednesday that the city's policy is simple -- demonstrators who break the law will be arrested. But there are vast numbers of protesters who insist they were swept off the street for no obvious reasons.
Demonstrators converged on the West Side on Wednesday Morning, where hundreds of their fellow protesters are being held in a dilapidated garage on the shores of the Hudson River. Katya Komisaruk\National Lawyers Guild: "People are beginning to call Pier 57, 'Guantanamo on the Hudson.'"

Protester: "Last I checked, freedom of speech, and standing on a sidewalk, and observing something going on is not illegal. And yet, many, many people were arrested. I was myself thrown to the ground, three officers tackled me. And I ended up, as you see, with a ... major cut on my forehead, and bumps all over my head." Timothy Lunceford, NY Civil Liberties Union: "There was no action happening. The people that I saw arrested in front of me were just walking down the sidewalk."
