3. Great move by the AFL-CIO
Edited on Thu Sep-02-04 07:49 AM by Gman
Specter is a friend of labor. Has been for years. He's likely going to win the election too so labor can claim to a large extent they helped get him reelected. If all Republicans were like Spector, the world would not be in the mess its in right now.

The MEMBERSHIP has spoken.

6. He was a Dem once.
I actually wirked on one of his campaigns when in High School. May be the closest thing to a "Rockefeller Republican."

8. Specter is one of those guys that could switch to us someday
He was challenged by a fundie-nut in the primary and barely scraped by. If we could ever take the senate--it could be good payback. Specter is more liberal than some Democrats so be careful. He is also pro-choice and pro-gay rights.

9. Did you bother to see why they did...
...before typing in your rant? Sen. Spector, although a Republican, is very PRO-union and has been throught his career. Stop flying off the handle before you get the facts...la

10. yeah... but every vote in the closely divided senate counts.
we are so close to gaining a majority in the senate that we cant afford Republicans, unfortunately, even the righteous ones.

12. Then you should check their voting
records. The fact is that on issues of abortion rights for example, Specter, along with the other Moderates has a history of voting with the Democrats. I wish he along with Collins, Snow and Chaffee would come over to our side but they do vote with Democrats on several important issues.

17. yeah... but party does matter in terms of who gets to be
majority party and have the control over the legislature. We just need more d'S ... pa isn't the south ... at some point specter has had to support repugnant R legislation.

14. Arlen Specter
has close to a 100% Labor record, what else should they do?

This isn't about political party, it's about who supports working people. Occasionally, that happens to be a Republican.

If we don't reward loyalty with loyalty, the Unions will lose credibility.

If Zell Miller were running for Re-Election this year, should the AFL-CIO endorse him just because he has a (D) next to his name?

Wake up and smell the coffee, Pro-Labor public officials can be members of any political party, or none, and should be judged on just their Labor voting record to receive a Labor endorsement.

15. Arlen Spector
has a Labor voting record that is close to 100%

I sit on an AFL-CIO endorsement committee (COPE) in the Boston area, and occasionally we run across a Labor friendly Republican.

If we ignore his loyalty to our cause because of his or her party affiliation, we would lose our credibility.

This isn't about party affiliation, it's about a strong voting record in favor of issues that favor the working class.

16. Purge? Ahem...
That's a mighty loaded word when referring to unions. And only a few posts. Interesting.

Arlen Specter is generally supported by unions in PA because he actually votes for union issues, and always has. The western PA unions especially like Arlen, and he courts them and votes for them pretty consistently. It is Joe Hoeffel's biggest challenge, since Arlen votes union and has seniority.

Know much about PA politics?
