That being said, it was full of the same pack of lies he always uses, but man, they must have really gotten his meds mix right tonight, because he almost sounded like a sane person. That was the best speech I've seen the bastard give. His SOTU speeches have all been pure agony.

I saw another post that Kerry is "loaded for bear". He damn well better be. The repukes pulled off their Nuremburg rally without a hitch, except for maybe Zell's hateful and insane rant yesterday. No more kid gloves, John - get out there and kick some chimp ASS!

6. Okay. so elaborate already...
You've seen Bush give BETTER speeches than that? Usually it's all he can do to keep from drooling on the mike.

You disagree that Kerry's been kicking back while the swiftboat lies are flung?

He should have come out and stated categorically the FACT that NONE of those bastards ever served on his boat, and if they doubted the authenticity of his injuries, he could infflict identical ones on them to see how they liked it.

I'm sick of this milquetoast crap. I remember the whole Dean/Clark arguments. About now, I'm starting to wish we'd picked one of them.

26. Even Christie Whitman kind of low-balled this speech.
She pointed out many more weaknesses than you guys but she said in the end it was a good speech. I heard more critical comments on FOX than elsewhere, including here. I must have misunderstood it. But anyway, Ilyana asks the key question: "But how are you livin'?"

4. Bush's "speech" sucked.
He was reading from a script. I know, I was reading along with that brain-damaged nit-wit.

16. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it was effective.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who are swayed by nothing more than smooth delivery, and cute little self-deprecating lines like the one about "swagger" being Texan for "walk".

There are a lot of idiots who EAT THAT SHIT UP. Throw in all the crab about how he'll never relent, never hesitate to "defend America" (implying that somehow murdering Iraq had something to do with defending this country.

Kerry will have to punch it up to overcome this crap and stop running like he's dealing with an informed, rational, eduacted electorate. This election will be decided by the clods who are actually swayed most by nonsensical platitudes.

In other words, people like THIS:

By making the case for the war. And by personally attacking him.

If he doesn't sound like a COMPLETE moron - then it's a great speech or he wins the debate.

15. I must disagree
When considering the effectiveness of speeches, I try to divorce my politics from my objectivity. Bush treated this like a State of the Union Adress. Delegates are not the same as adressing Congress. He focussed on the problems of society. This left him with the burden of explaining how his efforts had solved these problems. He simply couldn't do it. The best he could do was plug the standardized tests from No Child Left Behind. He talked about domestic agendas before the War(people need better health care, we need more funding for education). Who the hell interested in these things would vote on Bush? His supporters want to eliminate public education and completely privatize everything relating to healthcare. The joke about "swaggering" and the jibe at his Mom should have been done at the beginning. It ruined any dramatic buildup his speech could have had.

Also, "for every day, there is a season..." Isn't this a Byrds song? (okay, it's originally from Proverbs, but how many of his supporters are going to know that?) That quote makes him sound insane.

17. He is better scripted than improvising. And he didn't screw up, damn it.
That said, he didn't break any new ground or move any mountains -- just stock GOP talking points, and NO mention of OBL. Guess for *, that's "good" -- jeez, talk about lowered expectations!

You could see that when the two demonstraters were removed that he was rattled -- he cannot be even slightly distracted when he speaks, or he rolls off course.

So, the debates will be an entirely different matter. He will have to think on his feet, and shift course mentally, and without any script. And then, the *real* GWB will show up.

18. Sorry to disagree
but he looked scared (eyes) the smile was fake and he stumbled on many words. Only his base will appreciate most of what he said. An undecided would probably find him stiff, slow and phoney.

24. I hear you. I think you're right about the undecided voters...
I've been laid up all week with an ear infection, and am loaded with meds. I've been reduced to a TV-sucking couch-vegetable, and things have gotten more surreal by the hour. My perception of *'s performance could indeed have been colored by all that!

Hey, *happy* to be off base in this instance! :)

Talked about Bush not serving, about Cheneys 5 deferments, about Halliburton, health insurance, outsourcing, job loss, and his best line: "We now know what RNC stands for. Really Not Compassionate...

but I know a speech that will go over well with the rubes, and that was one of them.

I just barely saw the bit where a crying girl was being whisked away by security. Do you know any more about it? I couldn't hear her say anything or see a sign. I'm amazed that any non-assimilated beings were allowed into the hive.

Speaking of which, did you see the awestruck, glazed-over expressions of the audience as he spoke?

It was like a Jim Jones rally or something.
