Polygamist Who Raped 13-Year-Old Wins Early Release
Polygamist Who Raped 13-Year-Old Wins Early Release
Man Has 32 Children

POSTED: 8:13 am EDT September 2, 2004

DRAPER, Utah -- A religious polygamist, serving a sentence of up to life in prison for child rape for having a 13-year-old wife, has won a reduced term of six years.

At a Utah parole hearing, Tom Green renounced polygamy and claimed he would now forbid his own 13-year-old daughter, one of 32 children, to marry a man 25 years her senior. Green had earlier advocated his own brand of polygamous religion and married his first wife when she was 13 and he was 37.

3. Read "Under the Banner of Heaven" if you want to get really pissed off
By Jon Krakauer - fascinating and extremely disturbing.

10. Yes! I heard his interview on Fresh Air
last year, discussing this book. It's an extended interview with a Mormon turned radical/polygamist and murderer, isn't it?

4. Oh, I get it now.
He decides to renounce polygamy so that make the rape OK. Got it.

8. Just like in countries
Where a man who rapes a virgin won't be punished if he marries the victim. I remember reading about some South American nations where this is the standard.

Of course, here in VA there was a case a few years ago where a 20-something man's charges of statutory rape were dismissed when he married his 13-year-old "girlfriend."

5. just say "Jesus" and "Bible" a lot, and everyone excuses you
A perfect example of what's being discussed in the rape survivor thread started by Heddi. The system makes every excuse for creeps like this and the victims just don't seem to matter. Here's a guy who went on TV for years bragging about his whole lifestyle based on child-rape, incest and welfare fraud, and look at what a minimal punishment he gets.

6. Look at the threads on rape lately. The underlying theme in most of the
stories was:

no one believed us
no one stood up for us
no one took creedence in what we had to say.

For myself, the system let me down all the way from the bottom to the top.

When I went to the police station, the cops had this guy's RECORD in front of them. His history of sexual abuse towards minors and adults was staggering. Yet they did nothing. Here was a 12 year old telling them "hey! he did this to me too" and it was like he had no record, no past history, no just got out of jail within the past year for assaulting a woman...nothing.

Every time he was sent to court for molestation charges, the judges just sighed and gave him probation. time served. etc etc.

Every time he was in jail, he was given early release. Parole with MINIMAL---I mean MINIMAL supervision.

I found out a few years ago that when the rapist came to live with us the 2nd time (after he had been arrested for attacking a woman who gave him a ride home one night), his parole stipulated that he was not to live within X yards of a school, he was not to live in a house where anyone under the age of 18 lived, and he was not to be in any contact with children.

Think they followed up on that? HELL NO. Otherwise, they would have known that there was an elementary school 2 blocks away from my house. Otherwise, they would have known that I was 16 and living at the house. BOTH severe parole violations.

For three months, he never even MET with his PO and nothing was done.

I've heard every excuse in the book:

Early release: The prisons are overcrowded --- yeah, but let out people who write bad checks, not habititual sex offenders

Lax Sentencing: Well, he'd just be let out early anyways --- see above

Lack of Parole Supervision: We're overworked, understaffed, and underfunded --- great. sorry about that. However, that doesn't excuse their ignoring the highest level sex offender (one who is likely to repeat again) and never check up on them EVER to see if they're abiding by the rules of their parole.

It was a cluster fuck the whole way around. I'm sure one of the reasons my cries were ignored by the police is that I went into the station on a Thursday or Friday afternoon. Their shift was about over and who the fuck wants to listen to some hysterical bitch all fucking afternoon adn then have to fill out paperwork, get a warrant, make an arrest, do a booking THEN have to show up for god knows how many days of trial...fuck that, and fuck that lying little bitch tring to steal away an hour of my weekend.

Of course, I may be a bit biased :) but I have absolutely no faith in the system. They have no interest in victims and no interest in preventing crime or stopping crimes that are currently happening. Whatever you do, parents, don't report a child rape on a Friday or Weekend...you might cause Officer Dickhead to miss his fishing trip with the boyz

7. I can't believe it
I can't believe that guy got out early, my faith in the system is definitely going downhill. It is apparent that the government could care less about girls and women.

9. So...you are against Parole then?
Man did his time, has reformed.....etc etc

Six years in a Utah prison - victim, now an adult can speak at parole hearing....

Ever even spend the night in jail? - Six years in prison, probably not very comfortable...

If people are against parole, or forgiveness that's fine - but I think we need to be a little more consistent.
