I KNEW IT! BAD BABES ROCK! The Protester at *Speech was my friend!!
Edited on Fri Sep-03-04 04:43 PM by Pachamama
Last Night, I posted on the DU that I thought that the protester looked an awful lot like my friend Jodie Evans. Jodie is founder of a group of women I belong to called "Bad Babes" http://www.badbabes.org and a Co-founder of CodePink. She is a wonderful mom of 3 from Southern California who has a Yoga Studio here in the Bay Area and is active in Environmental Causes I have worked on for over a decade now (she sits on the Board of Rainforest Action Network, along with Bob Weir and Woody Harrelson and other good like-minded folks).

I am so excited and proud! Last night, Volcano Jen posted her picture and I thought it was her and it was!

How about a big shout out for Jodie Evans and Medea Benjamin, two great ladies who got the message out last night and disrupted George's Mojo!

Bad Babes Rock! CodePink is here!

ones in tow, that it would have been safe....I am so proud of her...On October 1st at the Rainforest Action Network Awards Dinner in San Francisco we will be awarding her for her relentless work for the environment....I'll be seeing her before that but I can't wait to just give her the biggest hug!

She was there for all of us and our children!

I am so in awe of protesters like her, like June Brashares, her colleague last night, and the ACT UP gang that breached the fortress walls and brought the war right into their faces. What excellent people! Please tell her how grateful we all--or we many?--are for her courage.

6. Here's what he (Josh Marshall) observed as Jodie "protested" Smirky:
.....My watching of the speech was disrupted in a jarring way because I happened to be sitting two seats away from one of the protestors who was hustled out of the arena during the president's speech. An unassuming women had been sitting on our press row for the couple hours prior to the speech. And about half way through out of the corner of my eye I saw a plainclothes police officer lunge in our direction. I looked back to see the woman who -- without my having noticed -- had tossed on a pink slip over her dress and I guess was about to start some sort of chant or statement.

He grabbed her; there was a brief commotion. Other officers rushed in our direction. And then before I could even figure out what was going on, she was gone.

There are some more details to the story, including the journalist sitting next to me, who started yelling at the woman -- or perhaps better to say, aggressively scolding her -- as she was dragged off. But I'll leave that till tomorrow......

These republi-CONS who carried on all week about how much better they are at protecting our security... couldn't even secure their own convention. THREE OUT OF FOUR nights protestors got in and disrupted things. That's a 25 percent success record...

40. Um, its Pachamama....its the Quechua word for "Mother Earth"
Where did I say they needed to "secure" their conventions from Journalists? Clearly the Dems didn't feel it necessary to do that with their convention...plenty of Repuke Journalists around there. And if one had tried to protest Kerry, he probably would have included that person's 1st amendment rights into his "speech".

Oh crybaby, why do you keep popping your little mouth off and crashing the party? In this thread and the other one, you somehow felt it necessary to "drop" in and throw in your muck and criticism...

Let me see if I can explain this to you....this thread was a "shout out" for praise....if you had "concerns" you could have posted in a way that allowed you to express that constructively, but instead you chose to start calling the object of our praise names like "stupid"... Then you render her press credentials "meaningless" (which they weren't)in another thread directed at me.

Here's Jodie's Bio....she's quite a remarkable and wonderful and accomplished woman....and a dear friend of mine - surely with the way you like to critique and judge people, you have lived your life in such an exemplary manner too, eh?

Jodie Evans
Jodie has been a community, social and political organizer for the last 30 years. She has used her skills, for the protection of the earth, to give voice to communities and people who go unheard and unseen, in the area of human and civil rights, to protect the rights of women, to raise the minimum wage for farm workers, to protect dolphins, in El Salvador in the early 80's and with Zapitistas since '94.

From 1973 to 1982, she served in administrative capacities in all of Jerry Brown's campaigns and in his staff and cabinet as Director of Administration. Breakthroughs in wind and solar energy happened while she was overseeing the office of Appropriate Technology.

During the years between 1985 and 1990, she took time off to be a mother while running the Hereditary Disease Foundation and founding the Grief Recovery Center after the death of her daughter. During this period, she was very active as the west coast board member of the Women's Campaign Fund, chair of the federal candidates committee of the Women's Political Committee, member of the Hollywood Women's Political Committee. She also raised money for out of state women candidates for federal offices and pro choice groups CARAL and Voters for Choice. With a group of women friends concerned about bringing children in to this world founded Environmental Media Association.

Along with a group of friends from the Brown administration, she was one of the founding board members of Sand County, a venture capital fund. The purpose of the fund was to invest in start up companies that solved environmental or social problems. This company also spawned a tax-free muni bond fund, The Muir Fund, that was named the fifth best fund in California in 1993. Some of it's other successes were Working Assets Funding Service and Odwalla Juices. She was also a member of the Social Venture Network, business owners and investors with a commitment to bring social and human values in to the work place.

In 1990, Jodie was very active in the Big Green campaign. After it's defeat, she, along with her partners Tom Hayden and Cathryn Tiddens, opened the first environmental department store, Terra Verde in Santa Monica. She also served as a board member of People for Parks, which was successful in passing an initiative for more funding to save the public parks in Los Angeles. Her other areas of involvement were supporting activists organizations such as, Citizen Action, Neighbor to Neighbor, Earth Island Institute, Environmental Media Association, Interfaith Task Force on Central America, International Overseas Education Fund, Los Angeles Women's Foundation, El Rescate, C.A.R.E., etc.

In 1991, she came back together with her friend Jerry Brown to run his campaign for President which was based on political reform and a $100. contribution limit. The innovations she began in his campaign have become the standard in all campaigns.

Following the campaign, she created We the People to encourage those that had been motivated by the efforts of the campaign to work in their communities by creating community projects and instilling them with habits of democracy and to continue the fight against big money in the election process. She also produced the radio program 'We the People with Jerry Brown', a daily liberal talk show. The best seller, Dialogues, is based on interviews from this show. From '94 she spent 4 years producing Stripped and Teased; Tales of Las Vegas Women.

She then co-created, with Georgia Kelly, a Peace Conference in Dubrovnik in June of 1999, about imagining Peace in the 21st century. The documentary "Unfinished Peace" created at the conference by 29 youth from the Balkan States, was in the Sundance Film Festival in 2001. After producing the very successful day of events for Mayor Jerry Brown's inaugural, Celebrating Oakland, she produced with her 2 partners the world Festival of Sacred Music in Los Angeles, 9 days and 85 concerts of sacred music, in October of '99, an event inspired by the Dalai Lama. She recently finished producing the Shadow Conventions 2000, alternative conventions to politics as usual.

In April 2002 she wrote a mission statement for Bad Babes and their Buddies, took it to a gathering she assisted in organizing that became Unreasonable Women of the Earth http://www.unreasonablewomen.org/ her life has been consumed with Codepink: Women for Peace since September of 2002.

24. Last night our Bill of Rights meeting
was held at a local pizza parlor. Nearby a large screen t.v. was turned on and a few people were watching the convention. Suddenly a loud WHOOP sounded and I spun around to see what was going on.

I was in time to see about a half dozen or more white men grab a woman and wisk her away. The camera din't stay on them for more than a few seconds. It then turned to whistle ass w/his now infamous deer-in-the-headlights look. At least 15 seconds went by before he could talk. He even forgot to smirk! When he did try to talk, he stumbled over his words, after losing his place on the teleprompter.

It was the BEST part of the convention!

Please let Jodie know that everyone in that resturant in North Bend, Oregon burst into cheers for her!

Thank you Jodie!

Go CodePink!

I heard the same crap in the 70's when we were in the streets protesting the war. Know what? We made mainstraem America uncomfortable, and that stopped that war, where we were fighting the threat to American life of that generation.

Is that the mesaage? WE stay and die and they don't? Remember, that wasn't a voluntary withdrawal at the end.

Insert yourself between historical forces, and then wonder why you get damage when there's a collision. Yeah. That's a winning strategy.

Freepers interrupt and heckle Kerry all the time. Remember "they want four more years of hell?" Difference is, Kerry just keeps going and doesn't freeze up like the Chimp. Leadership means keeping your cool even when things go off script.

Medea asked later on if Americans really feel safer that 3 nights in a row that the CodePink gals were able to penetrate the fortress and get on the floor and demonstrate.

I also posted to another Freeper in another thread on this topic that there are protesters to Kerry at his rally's regularly and that he either just ignores them or he even would address them and incorporate their "issue" into his speech and turn it around on them.

I think your right on about the point of leadership...and yes, Smirky did lose his mojo there when the protest erupted....

45. Tell Jodie she made the speech enjoyable!
* gave a crappy speech. relying more on his audience's Pavlovian Response Training than on any words of substance. He was nervous, afraid and had to deeply concentrate in order to deliver a steady, slow stream of pablum to his Young and Old Nazi minions.

I was focusing on Montezuma's Revenge, hoping he might suddenly implode, knowing in my heart he could FEEL the disapproval and disgust of the protesters swarming outside those safe walls, despite the ring of Neanderthals praising his Holy Nastiness.

When I heard the first ruckus, I thought, "Could it be? Could one or more of us have infiltrated?" To my delight, some of us had! I can't tell you how much Jodie and the other Code Pink gals made my evening. Rejoice!!!!!!!!!!!!

They are brave, brave women. And the world needs more of them.
