Protest groups 'empowered' by large turnout

By Martha T. Moore and Charisse Jones, USA TODAY

Kim Sue, 19, a New York college student, spent more than 24 hours in custody after she helped disrupt the Young Republicans rally in Madison Square Garden. She faces charges of assault from the ensuing scuffle — although she says she was punched by people attending the rally who were not arrested.

5. Is this really the woman who was kicked?
It is getting more and more unbelievable. What more do you need to see than the video tape?

I found this description of the incident on MSNBC.com. Unreal.

<snip>

Also taken into custody on Wednesday were a dozen whistle-blowing AIDS activists who infiltrated the Garden during a gathering of young Republicans.

Cheers and scuffles

A scuffle broke out, and one young Republican suffered a cut near his temple. A demonstrator, with authorities grabbing her knees and shoulders, was carried off the floor to cheers.

6. I don't believe it either
the people who do these types of protests are almost always highly disciplined and trained in nonviolence.

12. That would be correct! "Most" of us are, always. Training is usually
a part of being allowed to participate in the event being staged!

9. Contact MSNBC.com corrections.
I just sent this e-mail to them at corrections@feedback.msnbc.com

In your article "Protests accompany Bush acceptance speech" of September 2 you include the following information:

"Also taken into custody on Wednesday were a dozen whistle-blowing AIDS activists who infiltrated the Garden during a gathering of young Republicans.

Cheers and scuffles

A scuffle broke out, and one young Republican suffered a cut near his temple. A demonstrator, with authorities grabbing her knees and shoulders, was carried off the floor to cheers."

This protest was caught on videotape by a local ABC affiliate in New York. The tape clearly shows two men pulling the female protestor down to the floor as she has her hands raised, and then one of the men kicking the woman as she lies on the floor. The video can be seen at this address:

http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/news/gopcon/index.html

under the link "Protestors Breach Security, Make It to Garden Floor."

While there is some dispute about whether the injury inflicted to the young Republican in your story was the result of an accident, there can be no dispute that a young male Republican assaulted a helpless female protestor.

Please correct your story to include this information.

Sincerely,

11. Thanks. Here's what I sent.
I got a little snarky at the end. Its really hard to stay polite.

Dear MSNBC editors,

In your story, ""Protests accompany Bush acceptance speech" of September 2, your story includes this: "A scuffle broke out, and one young Republican suffered a cut near his temple. A demonstrator, with authorities grabbing her knees and shoulders, was carried off the floor to cheers."

This implies that the female protestor was an instigator. As you must know by now, the incident was caught on videotape and is available on the web. It clearly shows the young woman being overpowered by young Republican men. ONe of these young men then kicks her repeatedly. The video ends with a reporter qestioning the young man, who completely denies his attack. He lies and minimizes his attack, in spite of the reporter informing him on-air, that he was caught on video.

Please correct this mistake. Please correct it in a way that will actually be seen, and not hidden somewhere in a corrections cubbyhole.

The girl is now under arrest for assault. The attacker is free. Please demonstrate that you see this is wrong.

Thank You,

13. Same thing happened in Dallas, late October or early November of 2002.

Right before the election Bush came for an appearance at SMU. We staged a very large protest, many DU'ers were there. A number of the group I worked with managed to get tickets and were inside and unfurled a banner and spoke out. Several of the young men close by pushed and shoved a couple of the women involved. We got lucky that time, no one was hurt or arrested, but it was a very tense several hours before they were released by the SS.

This was also a historic moment. It was the first time that Bush's motorcade had to face down hundreds of protesters lining his route into the auditorium and hear and see us all along the way, (special note, it was getting dark and in a pouring rain). It may have been one of the most special moments I've been involved in these last few years, there was a very real sense of solidarity. Even in the rain, no one, not one person dropped out! With our without umbrellas, everyone hung in to the bitter end as we slowly allowed ourselves to be escorted to the special "free speech zone" that had been arranged for us far away from his sight. How did we make it happen. There were many of us that knew what we were doing and knew what they were up to and they had't gotten as good at it as they are now. I think we REALLY pissed Bush and Co. off that night! I'm sure of it.

Everyone involved in coordinating this event were trained peacekeepers and those that made it to the inside were as well.
