3. If this is in San Diego
I'll be happy to stop by and have a word with her.

Ask her if I can insert a jagged piece of metal in her, see if it bleeds or if she hurts or anything.

10. I'm a teacher. Don't attack the details or you'll get hung up on
minutia. The fact is that she is giving an opinion that is not based in fact. Totally inappropriate. She could have had an open discussion of facts and where they are found instead of giving a biased position. Start with the teacher and if you don't get a satisfactory response go to the principal. And calm down. Teachers are much more scared of the firm parent than the raving one.

I would not necesarily take your child out of her class as the first step. Teachers have a tendency to be caught off guard by criticism and are usually pleasers. They don't like to be in trouble, especially with parents. Don't tell her you are going to the principal, but do it as a follow up even if she says all the right things to you.

11. good advice
I'm also a teacher. I agree with that advice. Don't even get into a debate about the merits of each individual wound. Instead bring the conversation to supporting the troops - argue from the point of:

1. Whether anyone who wasn't there has any right to tell students that ANY vet didn't earn their medals.

2. The appropriateness of a teacher trying to infuence the politics of their students.

And definitely, no matter what she says, follow up with the principal, and not just a phone call - make sure there is something in writing you give to him that can be placed in a file. You need to get it on record that she's had one complaint on this.

14. Absolutely. I don't know about Virginia, but in my corner of Illinois
there are two files. Your personnel file that includes letters of reprimands by principals and the principal's personal file on teachers. Our contract states that principals will share any written complaint with the teacher.

15. The reason I am so upset, is this is the second time this has happened.
Edited on Fri Sep-03-04 09:05 PM by myday38
I have known this woman for about 20 years. Trust me when I say she really is a hag. This is easily a 90+% repug school in a highly republican state in a very small area. She openly called out for each student to declare their political preference. Each student did so with two students, one being mine, called out Democrat. She then expressed her opinions about that by calling Kerry a liar and how she couldn't stand Bill Clinton. I had words with her, and calmly I might add, last week when my other son was physically attacked by a senior boy in the cafeteria over politics while mine stood in the lunch line. But that was another post. Something is going to have to give here...and soon.

22. Do you belong to the ACLU?
Might want to contact them. I had to when we had a flap over my daughter saying the pledge.

And then this year we've already had her fourth grade teacher tell her "being gay is wrong." She has gay family members and she came home, told me and cried. I chewed the teacher a new one and she's been VERY nice to me and my daughter since.

Asshat.

I'm a teacher and I know well enough to leave my opinions OUT of it, or couch them in neutral terms if at all possible. Those kids are a captive audience and I am the authority figure, so I cannot and will not abuse that position!

23. We had the same problem last year with the pledge and my oldest
Edited on Fri Sep-03-04 10:57 PM by myday38
son. He refused to stand and pledge his allegiance to the Bush Administration. He told his teacher that when Bush was removed he would say the pledge. It was his way of protesting the war and talk of drafts. He said he didn't support murder in Iraq. If someone had attacked our country he would die to defend it, but he would not fight a war against innocent people. The teacher got angry and told to him to remove himself from that class and he should be ashamed of himself. He had never heard of such a thing. He sent my son to the principles office.
I went to that school and made it very clear they were the ones in violation here and my son deserved an apology in front of his class.
I asked that because he was humiliated infront of his class. I threatened to call the ACLU immediately if it wasn't done. And they
graciously apologized and said that it was mishandled by the teacher.

My kids have never and I do mean never, been in trouble for anything in school. Short of grade school name calling. But this is high school now. Year after year, teachers tell me what good and respectful kids I have. So now, because they disagree with the populations politics..they are suddenly looked at with undeserved scrutiny?! I am proud that they have opinions and want to be involved in shaping their world by peaceful means. They could be out doing alot worse things....I know I am venting. Sorry!

7. PH criteria
Edited on Fri Sep-03-04 08:01 PM by Gracie43
According to navy regs, a PH is awarded when a servicemember receives "an injury to any part of the body from an outside force or agent sustained while in action ..."

Further, the wound must be treated by a medical officer and record of treatment be made part of official record.

Kerry's awards all meet this criteria. Being 'hurt' is not part of it. People are hurt all time in the service, far worse than Kerry ever was, but they're not awarded the PH just because they were.

Even action doesn't necessarily qualify. A not unrealistic Nam scenario: Night attack, two guys make the dash for the bunker, one trips, falls, injures leg, maybe breaks it. The another gets a slight laceration from flying debris caused by explosion from a mortar round. First guy's in hospital for weeks, maybe even shipped home; second guy's back on duty next day. Guess which gets the PH.

If teacher has a problem with this criteria, she should take it up with the US Navy or the DOD, not run her mouth at a bunch of school kids who can't answer back.

FWIW

9. Here's the link you want, but that's not the point
Edited on Fri Sep-03-04 07:58 PM by 0rganism
Your son's teacher has NO BUSINESS WHATSOEVER interjecting her political viewpoint into the classroom, let alone unsubstantiated allegations such as those. Ask her how she'd feel if her kid was in a classroom where the teacher was calling bush a deserter.

Here. http://www.johnkerry.com/about/john_kerry/military_records.html

Look especially for the Personnel Casualty Report, which details the second and third injuries. These are reports filed by the attending doctors and medical staff, not by the casualty.

16. Ok DUrules7 GO back to FREEPER land I can't stand one more
comment from a shrub lover. AT Least Kerry's served in the Military!!! By the way, Bush told us last year Cheney would pay back the 7.2 million or so he owes us...Well tell him we want it!!
Also Bush needs to give back the money he owes this government for the time he was in service and NOBODY could find his butt. And another thing you say Kerry basically "mislead", Look at shrubs record for out and out lies on everything. He has tried to deny, hide and restate every thing from the economy to his personal history to his military (national guard) record. And since I have a freeper to say this to....My God, Jesus, doesn't make mistakes, and if he had actually had his right hand on George Bushes shoulders guiding him to make peace in the middle east like George W. Bush stated to PBS, on the 'Jesus Factor'....
HE WOULD HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL !!!!!!!!!

18. little credibility issue
It's going to be hard to convince us that Kerry was specifically trying to be stationed stateside, when his request for service says: "I request duty in Vietnam." "I consider the opportunity to serve in Vietnam an extremely important part of being in the armed forces and believe that my request is in the best interests of the Navy."

19. Regardless of the information you provided...
It doesnt change the fact that Kerry went, served honorably, was decorated for heroism and for wounds sustained in action.

The author of this hack piece also "conveniently left out" the fact that on his service request, he volunteered for overseas duty which at the time meant Viet Nam.

Bush, on the other hand, specifically requested on his service request not to be sent overseas.
