We've passed the 1,000 Dead Soldiers mark, as if anyone cared
http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/ops/iraq_casualties.htm

i heard eric alterman say yesterday on the subject of the significance of the casualty figures, and the number 1,000. he said it would probably be a 'one day' story, and will probably have no effect on people's opinions on the war anyway. he's probably right.

1. I'm not sure we are beyond 1000 for soldiers.
We are around 970. But we are over 1000 if you include American civilian workers. Last week 15 soldiers were killed and the media hardly even mentioned it. The media is the problem.

5. On a quick glance
That graph of the wounded showed one hell of a spike in Aug. Suspect this has something to do with the slow approah to 1,000.
This war sucks and this administration will do whatever it can to make it all look like a great win and everything smells nice and the media has good sanitized stories to tell.
:argh:

7. technically, a 'casualty' is a death, OR injury
but the new way of counting only counts the dead soldiers as casualites. if you count the injured, it goes up into about the 6,000 figure. and we don't even count the dead, or catogorize them into actual enemy combatants, or innocent bystanders/innocents.

and the figure they show at the bottom exceeds 1,000 dead. but in any event, the suffering has been sanitized and reduced to statistics.

6. Nope, 979
But Alterman is probably overstating it. Fox probably will have about 8 seconds of it in one of their newsbimbo alerts at 1:30 in the afternoon.

9. 1,013 according to the link in my post...but who are they?
statistics are easily manipulated, and i figure we've passed the magic 1,000 mark weeks ago.

15. Maybe your figures include non-US soldiers
or maybe people who later died once out of Iraq from complications in their injuries. I don't know. Lunaville I believe is the most credited website for the casualties.

http://icasualties.org/oif/

they have 1110 combined coallition casualties. That includes Brits, Spaniards, Italians, etc.

10. They don't count the deaths that occur in Germany, etc. .
If a soldier survives long enough to make it to Landstuhl, or San Antonio, e.g., he/she is not counted as a 'combat death', from what we were told...

:wtf:

11. another way to lie about the numbers
hide the statistics, manipulate them, keep it happy and shiny and don't show the grief and suffering going on. it's a sick system and we have to change it.

13. I agree.
Dead is dead, and this administration is being as dishonest about that number as it is about everything else it does.

21. Nonsense
icasualties has counted every death, and we are at 979. The globalsecurity count is full of holes, and deaths unidentified months later.

icasualties has a much more accurate count, with documentation for EVERYTHING, even those soldiers who have died at Walter Reed weeks later. You are, quite simply, wrong. You heard a rumor, and now you simply repeat it without any knowledge to back up your claim. You're wrong.

23. Over a year ago
I read a report about the stress the medical teams were under in the German press. At THAT time they put the number of "casualties" at 8,000. The U.S. NOW admits to 6,000 wounded? Gimme a fuckin' break.

12. The sad thing is, we really don't know.
There has been very heavy fighting going on since fucknutz did his little end around play. Since then the media has been shutdown, and if you don't believe your govt. would lie to you I've got some prime real estate for sale.

24. We've passed the 16,000 mark
on Iraqi lives...wonder how many innocent Afghani citizens
died also to rid the world of two men, one missing.

Do people feel the same outrage at the death of
16,000 plus versus 3,000 here? I don't think so.
And we wonder why they hate this administration.

Let's get a reality check and quit living in
Bushworld.

They are now reduced to statistics just like the Iraqis they were sent to kill.

Ironic.
