Democracy Only Works...

Just before the Soviet Union came unglued I had dinner with Vladimir Posner, a friend, and one of Russia's most distinguished journalists. I asked him how censorship had worked. I had in mind an Orwellian office where nameless minions of the state carved out the heart of honest journalism. When I told him this he gave me a look of pity and bemusement. "Maybe in North Korea, but here, now, the reality is self-censorship. You know what your editor wants. He doesn't have to tell you. Good reporters get ahead because they catch the drift, whether spoken or unspoken, of not just their sources, but their editors." He paused to take a sip of coffee then, putting down his cup said, "If you think it is any different in the U.S. you are deluded. And, I predict, it is only going to get worse for you, as fewer and fewer huge corporations control more and more of your media. "

1. We have to first understand we don't live in a Democracy.

We never did. It has always been an illusion. If we want a Democracy we will have to make one.

3. Uh, its not an illusion - its by design.

Its always been a republic - not a Democracy. The founders knew very well what befell the other Democracies historically and didnt want that. Matter of fact, the term wasnt used to describe our system untill the early 1900s.

You dont want pure democracy - lynch mobs aint fun.

Exactly the hypocrisy my Russian wife talks about whenever the question of 'freedom' and 'democracy' is raised.
