Barbara Bush said she was pleased her sons avoided vietnam in 1974
A Kiwi friend of mine recently told me this story about her husband. So it is second hand...but it is also true. She is a senior govt. lawyer and the person involved is a trade unionist.

He was visiting China in 1974, part of one of the early communist student tours, and bumped into a well groomed American woman in a hotel. They got talking and it took a while before the Kiwi realised who he was talking to. The American Ambassador's wife. The subject moved onto the subject of the Vietnam war and the woman remarked that she was "very pleased that her sons had not been called up to fight".

In 1974 President Ford appointed Bush head of the US liaison China, effectively the US ambassador to China.

Not that we needed anymore confirmation but that comes from the matriarch. Thought y'all would be intrested. :)

3. Because they believe their country owes *them*

The overprivileged have a sense of self entitlement that knows no bounds.

Deep down (or as deep as these shallow individuals get), all the Bushes must really believe that other people owe their lives to them.

5. I don't know about Neil, but Jeb was probably too young.
Remember, they did away with the draft. I'm sure that's the only reason shrub went into the NG. You have to be old enough to remember that this was one way to avoid being drafted, which almost guaranteed you would go to 'Nam. There were a few other options, like getting married which reduced you from 1A to 4A if I remember right. There were many, many who went to Canada, got student deferments, etc.

7. I just wish that they all avoided public office in the same way.
We would all be better off.
