Congress Debating The Draft?
I was speaking with some of my peers at an organizational meeting we were having on campus today. One of them casually mentioned that Congress is currently debating reactivation of the draft, or at least, revision of the draft laws (to eliminate Consciencetious Objector status or college deferrments). Apparently, there was talk in Congress of including women in the draft too, but that idea was quickly shot down.

This took me completely by shock! I was aware of the Rangel/Hollings legislation, but I thought that was written a long time ago and that Republicans had basically scoffed at Rangel's proposition. But this reference seemed to be regarding a piece of legislation entirely different from the one Rangel wrote! I was also astounded because I figured that if Congress was debating the draft, it would be all over the news - - and that both Bush and Kerry would be publicly denouncing it in order to earn political points for their campaigns (although there is no doubt in my mind that Bush wouldn't hesitate to bring back the draft if he got a second term).

Does anyone know if this type of legislation actually exists? And is it being discussed right now? Or is this just an empty rumor with no merit to it?

3. The earlier Wrangel (House) and Hollings (Senate)...
...bills appear to be the only ones offered this session.

Unless it's buried within one of the big bills.

Search here....
