2. I'm an employer with several employees that I could now screw out
of their overtime. But I won't, it's just not right.

3. Are any of them Bush supporters?

If so, you know what to do. The Bush supporters can have their flux time; it's not unfair according to Bush.

7. I agree...although I'm In Aussie I have 2 employees who are very
young and I insist they join the union..my Grandfather fought bitter battles for me to have a good lifestyle ( and them ) and I want them to realise what it's all about.

Amazingly, it works..and you get more from your workers when they think the right way !

8. The point is not to dramatically decrease pay at one time...
but to whittle away at it a little at a time. Employers (as a whole) will do this like putting a frog in water and slowly turning up the heat. Too much at once will stir up resentment. A little at a time will be excused as "the pressure of the market"
:kick:

and Palast just had a column that said that veterans are now EXEMPT from overtime if they learned their job skills in the military. I think that is Fucking obscene, I can't believe he is going to get away with it.

It also makes certain people ELIGIBLE for overtime, but it apparently stresses for employers that the way to get out of paying these folks more is to simply CUT THEIR PAY to the point where they don't make anymore money at all. Unbelievable.

edit:

here it is from the horse's mouth:
"My favorite of Chao's little amendments would re-classify as "exempt professionals" anyone who learned their skill in the military. In other words, thousands of veterans will now lose overtime pay. I just can't understand why Bush didn't announce that one when he landed on the aircraft carrier.

Now I should say, according to Chao's press office, the changes will actually extend overtime benefits to 1.3 million burger flippin' managers. How does that square with the billion dollar "benefit" to business owners? Simple: The Chao hounds at the Labor Department suggest that employers CUT WAGES so that, added to the new "overtime" pay, the employees won't actually take home a dime more.

I can hear the moaners and bleeding hearts saying this sounds like the Labor Department is telling Big Business how to evade the law. Yep, that's what the Department is doing. Right there on page 15,576 of the Federal Register it says,

"Affected employers would have four choices concerning potential payroll costs: … (4) converting salaried employees' basis of pay to an hourly rate that result in virtually no changes to the total compensation paid those workers."

10. I've heard it will hit nurserys hard.
Yes,
on the other end of the bill spectrum you have agricultural migrant workers who were exempt from getting paid overtime.

Anybody have a handle on agriculture labor laws concerning seasonal employees ?

I know of a greenhouse that may pass on this cost of overtime onto the local retail stores that buy their plants and flowers.

There wasn't much of a fuss made about this bill a day or two after it went into law.

12. Nope, see above
Elaine Chao's labor dept. is telling them to cut pay so the workers don't make a dime more. They are stressing this in the new regs.

11. My husband has to take that wonderful comp time and he'd
much rather have that than the extra money (not)! In a way I'm glad it happpened now rather than after the election. Hopefully, enough of the R/Wing base will lose their overtime to wake them up!

14. By the time they wake up and notice something is really wrong
And that they are getting really severely screwed, Rush and Hannity will have convinced them that its the Democrats' fault.
