Fox: "Deficit to reach $422B, highest ever yet smaller than predicted"
So the deficit gets a "downward forecast" and it's only a matter of seconds before Bush will be whoring his tax cuts as proof that the economy, as John Snow likes to put it, is "firing on all cylinders."

"Analysts Revise Deficit Forecast Downward"

WASHINGTON — The Congressional Budget Office (search) is projecting that this election-year's federal deficit will reach $422 billion, congressional aides said Tuesday, the highest ever, yet a smaller shortfall than analysts had predicted earlier this year.

The figure, provided by aides who spoke on condition of anonymity, is sure to provide political fodder for both parties during the remaining two months of the presidential and congressional campaigns.

Democrats plan to cite it as evidence that President Bush's tax and economic policies have been a disaster. But Republicans are ready to assert that the numbers show things are improving.

The number was being released later Tuesday in the annual summertime forecast issued by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, this year, eight weeks before the presidential and congressional elections. Last year's budget deficit was $375 billion gap, the largest ever in dollar terms.

9. Plus the money that Bush wants to move from "rebuilding" to "security"...
...in Iraq. He'll move it now, and "replace" it later.

11. I always loved that one.
The EU won't let a country remain in the union if it's deficit is more than 3% of the GDP.

France had a little crisis a couple of years ago, and had to cut some spending to get things back under the EU limits. Right-wing commentators here in the states made as much hay out of that as they could, claiming that France was being forced to follow the US lead.

At the very same time, they were saying we shouldn't worry about our own deficit, because it was only 6-7% of the GDP.

It was unreal. I even heard some of these blowhards make *both* arguments simultaneously.

Yep, real men legislate their agendas through. Cowards just don't enforce laws they don't like while starving the government so they can shrug and say "gosh, we can't afford THAT".
