China Will Send Troops to Haiti

http://www.washtimes.com/national/20040906-123723-3774r.htm

China's Public Security Ministry is set to dispatch a 130-man "special police" unit to Haiti this month in the first deployment of Chinese forces to the Western Hemisphere, Bush administration officials say.
The first advance unit of the police troops, who are specially trained for riot and crowd control, will over the next two weeks join the U.N. Stabilization Mission in Haiti, the multinational force known as Minustah dispatched to the war-torn Caribbean island.

According to China's state-run Xinhua news agency, the Chinese security forces, known as the People's Armed Police, have spent three months in special training and passed exams administered by the United Nations.

1. Now this is a suspicious move
considering that China has always opposed international peacekeeping missions.

4. Me worry?
Why would I be worried about a totalitarian nuclear power of 1.3 billion people and an army of 2.5 million that grows stronger every year? It's those I Raq eees I'm worried about and their crop dusters that are going to spread chemical weapons over my hometown.

5. China is thinking long term
China is giving aid to countries in South America, Central America & Africa in hopes that when they inevitably confront the US over Taiwan independence, that nobody will stand with us. And, so they can set up favorable trade agreements so China can do to them what the US has done in SE Asia and Central America for years - exploit the cheap labor & resources.

13. "China has always opposed international peacekeeping missions" - wrong.
"Since 1999, the Chinese government has sent 253 police to participate in UN peacekeeping missions, including operations in East Timor, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Liberia, Afghanistan, Kosovo and Haiti. Currently, 55 policemen are still left in these areas for peacekeeping tasks."

(Xinhua News Agency June 5, 2004)
http://www.china.org.cn/english/2004/Jun/97392.htm

In the same article we find a possible motive:

""China's active involvement in peacekeeping missions of the United Nations, especially in Haiti that has not set up a diplomatic relationship with China, fully exhibits a peace-loving and responsible image of the country," Meng said."

Did Haiti have a diplomatic relationship with Taiwan? Yes.

"Chen also said that Haiti and Taiwan have been allies for forty-eight years"
http://www.taiwanheadlines.gov.tw/20040810/20040810p2.html

"Taiwan’s Haiti embassy to monitor PRC mission

Taiwan’s embassy in Haiti will closely monitor the actions of China’s 125 riot police for a United Nations peacekeeping mission, ensuring the Chinese "do not become involved in any activities other than those they are supposed to," spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said yesterday."

3. Wouldn't this violate the Monroe Doctrine?
God forbid that Junior is in the White House, if we are faced with anything even remotely resembling a Cuban missile crisis type of situation. :scared:

6. What are you talking about?!?
This is a POSITIVE move! China engaging in peace-keeping activities is very much needed in this world, and I'm sure the average Haitian agrees.

7. And what if the largest nation on Earth, already in the western hemisphere
...decides they want to stop Bush fascism, by doing to George what he did to Saddam.

Then what?

Hey, I like Kung Pao chicken as much as the next guy, but I'm not exactly thinking an invasion by communist China is a solution to the Bush Criminal Empire.

11. That is some paranoid
thought...China has no interest in toppling the Bush regime, and what does a few peace-keepers has to do with an attack anyway? If you want to avoid conflict with China, the US should get their asses out of the South China sea.

12. This is a UN peace-keeping force
trying to bring Haiti back on track. China offering their services in these efforts is greatly appreciated.
