Ok People... Help me with this email... What is the correct response?
Heinz products

I checked and my bottle of Heinz catsup says "Product of
Canada"! Guess I'll be checking out all the Heinz products at the store! Shortly after reading the following e-mail content, I happened to look at the label of a jar of Heinz sandwich slice pickles. Yep...."Made in Mexico."

Check some of your Heinz products. Sen. John Kerry keeps talking about
U.S. corporations leaving this country and setting up shop in foreign
countries, taking thousands of jobs with them. He is right, because
that has happened.

However, he is trying to blame it on George W. Bush. As far as I know,
Bush has not moved one factory out of this country because he is
not the owner of a single factory. That cannot be said about Kerry and
his wife, Teresa Heinz-Kerry. According to the Wall Street Journal, the Kerry’s own 32 factories in Europe and 18 in Asia and the Pacific.

In addition, their company, the Heinz Company, leases four factories
in Europe and four in Asia. Also, they own 27 factories in North America, some of which are in Mexico and the Caribbean.

I wonder how many hundreds of American workers lost their jobs when
these plants relocated in foreign countries. I also wonder if
the workers in Mexico and Asia are paid the same wages and benefits
as workers in the United States. Of course they're not. However, Kerry demands that other companies that relocate should pay the same
benefits they did in the U.S. Why does he not demand this of the Heinz Company, since he is married to the owner?

If Kerry is elected, will he and his wife close all those foreign factories and bring all those jobs back to America?

Of course they won't. They're making millions off that cheap labor.

PLEASE SEND THIS TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW TO MAKE SURE THEY HAVE THE FACTS...

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok, this is me...Jokinomx, I know that she married into the Family and her first husband was a Republican. That the company is a large company that employs thousands worldwide. I can see that it makes sense to produce a product in the home country your serving... but to import products from countries that are cheap labor is doing what Kerry has spoke out against.

Enlighten me please. My Mother sent me this ... because some of my RW sisters are as against Kerry as much I am against *.

Thanks in Advance....

snopes already has this one marked as FALSE
Edited on Tue Sep-07-04 07:33 PM by 0rganism
http://www.snopes.com/politics/kerry/heinz.asp

"Neither Mrs. Heinz Kerry nor Senator Kerry nor any of the Heinz trusts or endowments — either individually or collectively — holds a significant percentage of shares of the H.J. Heinz Company. In 1995 the Heinz Endowments and family trusts sold a large percentage of Heinz shares in a secondary share offering to diversify their holdings. As a result, their current holdings are under 4 percent.

"There is no connection between any philanthropic programs of the H.J. Heinz Company and its Foundation and the Heinz family interests (including the Howard Heinz Endowment, the Vira Heinz Endowment, and the Heinz Family Philanthropies).

...

"Currently, 60% of the sales of the H.J. Heinz Company are outside the United States and to accommodate those customers by providing facilities closer to those markets, the company maintains a number of overseas facilities that provide products for consumers in those markets. This allows Heinz to pack the freshest ingredients, tailor its recipes to local tastes and deliver the finished products in a timely and efficient manner. In the United States, Heinz makes its flagship ketchup in factories in Fremont, Ohio; Muscatine, Iowa; and Stockton, California."

9. Don't forget to ask how your mom likes to be the SPREADER OF LIES
Edited on Tue Sep-07-04 07:54 PM by 0rganism
Does it sit well with her to know that she's LYING to her children?

How many other LIES will she be spreading about Sen. Kerry in the next two months?

Suggest that she might want to apply FACT CHECKING of her own before she does her part to "make sure others have the facts".

There was a book that came out a while back, a few people still seem to think it's important, that mentioned something along the lines of "Thou shalt not bear false witness". Is she the sort of person who reads much?

See, the more I think about it, the more it seems to me like you ought to do whatever it takes to turn her and your sisters around. Use this e-mail to shame them if you have to: isn't it shameful to spread such patently false accusations against an honorable man? What kind of assholes would put them up to it? Are these propagandists the kind of strongly moral people your family would invite into your homes? Doesn't it offend them that these republicans would use your family as tools to propagate falsehoods?

Try to generate some outrage with your rebuttal. They should hold themselves to a higher standard of proof! Get them questioning the sources, and pretty soon they'll be doing the work for you.

10. Thanks again Organism....
I responded with a quick and to the point email.. then sent another (before I read this response) with a longer more direct attack on what this type of email is intended to do.

My Mother is a saint... she had 16 children... some of which are one issue voters... (guess what issue?) Anyway...they can't stand Democrats because of this one issue. They are born again fundies... and I am the extreme opposite. (non-religious)

I won't let them off the hook very easy with this one... I really do appreciate the quick response from everyone here. It really helped with being able to slam this type of letter.

The actual letter....

For those that really want a better understanding of this topic please follow this link..

http://www.snopes.com/politics/kerry/heinz.asp

This is a typical email designed to spread false information knowing that a VERY small percentage of the people will actually try to find the truth. They will latch onto these lies and say "SEE, SEE I told you!!" This election is not about this issue... it is about companies that close down and move out of the United States. The Hienz company as explained in my first email... does have factories in foreign lands... to be closer to their market...

I am not defending the Hienz company... I am sure with a little research, you would find some very shadey things going on in their corporate world. ANY large company flirts with moral and ethical issues every day.

What is appalling about this letter is that it insinuates that both THK and John Kerry are hypocrites. It spreads false statements and infers that both are lier's.

Please... feel free to send me anything you might find that has substance to it..... I am always looking for the truth.

Your Son, Brother and Friend,

Kim

1. Tell them
Edited on Tue Sep-07-04 07:32 PM by lizzy
Kerry isn't in charge of Heinz, for crying out loud.
Even Theresa sold most of her shares in Heinz.
Whoever is in charge of Heinz has been saying Heinz doesn't support either democrats or republicans, it's a non-political ketchup, LOL.
And tell them-Kerry isn't married to the owner of Heinz.
Theresa is not the owner of Heinz.

2. Teresa
Has absolutely NO administrative authority over Heinz. And, if you really want to make a point, Heinz is run by a bunch of rabid repukes.

3. there was a thread about this eons ago
Edited on Tue Sep-07-04 07:33 PM by NV Whino
And I'm sure some of the more astute DUers will provide a link, but in essence, Heinz-Kerry doesn't own Heinz. She has stock, but she is no longer involved with the active running of the company.

You might also check out one of the hoax sites to de hoax this.

4. OK one MORE TIME......
Edited on Tue Sep-07-04 07:35 PM by AZDemDist6
Teresa only owns about 4% of the stock of Heinz (in trust for her children) she is not on the Heinz Board of Directors, she has NOTHING to do with the running of the company

According to Heinz itself, the Heinz family trust which Mrs. Kerry inherited sold most of its shares of Heinz stock back in 1995 (around the time she and Kerry married) and currently holds less than a 4% interest in the company:

Neither Mrs.

There is no connection between any philanthropic programs of the H.J. Heinz Company and its Foundation and the Heinz family interests (including the Howard Heinz Endowment, the Vira Heinz Endowment, and the Heinz Family Philanthropies).
(A 4% stake in a company as large as Heinz still represents a considerable amount of money, but it isn't nearly large enough a share to give the holder any significant control or influence over the company's business decisions.)
