8. At Least Nine Killed by Hurricane Ivan
ST. GEORGE'S, Grenada (AP) - Hurricane Ivan made a direct hit on Grenada with ferocious winds, causing ``incalculable damage'' and killing at least nine people as it turned concrete homes into rubble and hurled hundreds of the island's landmark red zinc roofs through the air, officials said Wednesday.

10. Crap, it's just going to work it's way up the coast.
After today in NYC with all the rain and taking an eternity to get to work, I shudder to think what will happen when Ivan gets up this far north. Florida is actually prepared to handle these storms, New England sure as hell isn't.

15. This would not make it to NY in the condition it is in now.
NY has dealt with them before. It can do it again. We would have a problem with a Cat. 4, but I don't know if NY has ever been hit with one. The water is cooler here and it weakens the storms.

19. FL is prepared???
Only 10-15% of the homes in my neighborhood have shutters. We ran out of gas before Frances hit and at best a little over half of the stations in FL are pumping now. We have two routes out of the state I-95 and I-75. My county has over 200,000 people, yet we have shelter space for maybe 10,000. Shelters don't take pets,so they aren't an option for many of us. We are lucky, our homes are newer and built to withstand a 3. As of 5 pm, Ivan is a 4 and may get stronger. The official track has it coming within 30 miles of our house. We may miss the worst of it, but someone else is going to get hit and hard.

Edited on Wed Sep-08-04 09:07 PM by geomon666
What did we do to deserve this? Those people on the west coast of Florida are especially f***ed. I've lived in Florida most of my life and this is the single worst hurricane season I've ever seen. This has to be some sort of record. Hit by 3 major hurricanes in a single season. We've left the toilet seat (Jeb) up and now Mother Nature is pissed at us.

Far-stretching Frances disrupts N.C. from mountains to coast

By PAUL NOWELL
Associated Press Writer

CANTON, N.C. - The remnants of Hurricane Frances stretched across North Carolina on Wednesday, flooding mountain communities in the west and chopping up the surf 450 miles away along the coast.

More than a foot of rain over the past day and a half in parts of western North Carolina forced rivers out of their banks and pushed mud and rocks down mountain slopes, while at least six possible tornadoes spun through the central and eastern parts of the state. Rip current warnings were issued along the Outer Banks.

Hundreds of people evacuated their homes to avoid flooding. Rescuers pulled several stranded people from rising water, but no deaths or serious injuries were reported.
>snip<

The National Guard activated 140 soldiers to help with rescue and relief operations and 26 shelters were open Wednesday morning, state safety officials said.

More than 200 roads were impassable due to high water and mudslides. About 12,000 customers were without electricity in four mountain counties, state officials said.

Preliminary reports from the National Weather Service said the town of Edgemont, 80 miles northeast of Asheville, received 16.6 inches of rain, while Lake Toxaway, about 60 miles in the opposite direction, got nearly 14 inches before the bulk of the storm moved out of state to the north.

-----

According to Accuweather.com, she's still dumping a lot of rain in her path.

The remnants of Frances will continue moving northeastward Wednesday night and Thursday. The storm will move along the spine of the Appalachians. That, combined with moist easterly winds blowing up the mountain slopes, will create heavy rain. Some parts of western Pennsyvlania, western Maryland and eastern West Virginia may receive over 8.00 inches of rain!

22. Here in Sunrise, we just got our power back
We've kept most of the shutters on for now (we couldn't deal with the darkness on top of lack of electricity)

We kept our grumbles to a minimum over the last five days as we knew folks were lining up for 5 hours for ice water and food.

The SE coast is wary-- Gas won't make it in time, nor will ice I fear. We just have to hope that a miracle occurs and it doesn't hit anywhere (yes, I know, I know-- it's going to hit-- where--we just don't know) I wouldn't wish this on anyone--but someone's gotta pick the short stick.

Unprecedented to say the least.

One bright spot-- we didn't have to deal with the aftermath of stupidity that was the media over the last few days down here. It was all Frances all the time.

By the way-- BAN THE FICUS TREE!!! :)

31. The Ficus tree is a large tree with a shallow root system
The Ficus trees can grow quite large--their "stump" can be upwards to 15-20 feet wide-- they are lovely to behold, but their shallow root sytem and tangled upper portions make them a problem

We had a situation down in north Miami-Dade where a Ficus, whose roots had worked their way into the foundation of a house, uprooted, pulling the house up from its foundation while falling onto the next house over...

Most of the trees that fell, it seems were Ficus trees-- not a good thing.

Our palms kept standing at least.

36. I can't take a third one!
Still without power, still debree from Charley and Frances piled high in our yard. We are exhausted from all the work. Our shutters are still up , food and water supply good, have now got a generator installed. Gas will be a problem. My mom' place in Vero survived, she is still in a motel in Lakeland waiting for her electric. I guess we will have to have her go back to Vero. Kids just all got back from Ga. yesterday! We are in Brevard county, got hit hard here. I am calling this one Ivan the wimp, in hopes it peters out over Jamaica and Cuba. Mentally I cannot take one more, I am so tired!

37. I agree--but we are all fighters here on the DU
We've spent 3 1/2 years in the Age of Darkness

And we survived

We've seen a war coming that we knew was wrong

And we survived

We've agonized over the primaries and the lies

And we survived

We shed and still shed tears over the war dead and wounded.

And we survived

Charley hit

And we survived

Frances hit

And we survived

Ivan--we're tired, we're bruised, we're frayed and slap happy--but we will survive.

By the end of all this we should all get T-Shirts saying "And we survived" --

The problem is-- so many in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere have not

And to that list we should add Grenada, Florida, etc.

We will survive because it is what we owe to those who did not and it is what we do.

* gets off soap box and removes Maya Angelou outfit* :)

US President George W. Bush (news - web sites) (R) and his brother Florida Governor Jeb Bush (L) assist victims of Hurricane Frances at a government relief station in Ft. Pierce, Florida.(AFP/Paul Richards)

Bush's visit to hurricane-hit Florida could get him votes

>snip<
The president, accompanied by his brother Jeb Bush -- the southeastern state's governor -- talked to a few residents and volunteers as he stood for about 30 minutes in the sweltering heat, handing out bags of ice.

He also delivered a promise of two billion dollars in emergency aid.

"He's coming all the way here to see we're OK. It shows he cares," said Benito Diaz, a mason who waited in line in his car.

"He's got my vote," said his wife, Maureen, a 30-something homemaker who had previously been unsure as to whom she would vote for.

Maybe the Bush's are getting the military to generate these big storms to deflect attention from Iraqistan or destroy the infrastructure to screw up the election. :tinfoilhat: aside, I live in NW Florida, thankfully all these storms have just pummeled the peninsula rtaher than the panhandle. Hang tight, south florida citizens.
