NBC News just showed a clip from the 1988 Republican Convention
of an interview of George W.Bush with Connie Chung. She asked Bush about Dan Quayle's service in the National Guard as opposed to serving in Vietnam. Bush said and I quote "Maybe they should have sent the National Guard over to Vietnam instead, they probably would have done alot better". I wonder how that makes Vietnam Veterans that just saw that or happen to see a clip of that would feel. That is really sad. I wonder if they will show again in other time zones. Or if someone could post the clip of that which I don't know how to do that. Thanks  :grr: :grr:

4. Here is some text I found
CONNIE CHUNG: The problem, though, would be is if, indeed, made several phone calls or some people made phone calls on his behalf to get him into the National Guard. I mean, did that happen to you? Were you...
DUBYA (interrupting): No. I don't think so. But in those days, people were going into the service all different branches. And if you want to go into the National Guard, I guess sometimes people make calls. I don't see anything wrong with, a matter of fact I'm glad he served his country. And serving in the National Guard is serving in the military. They probably should have called the National Guard up in those days. Maybe we'd have done better in Vietnam.
-- Even in 1988, Dubya's dodges the question, while also managing to sneak in a backhanded compliment to the troops that actually fought in Vietnam, Interview with Connie Chung (NBC) at the 1988 Republican convention, New Orleans, Louisiana, Aug. 17, 1988

them too. But they are too filled with hate to understand when they are being smeared.

It was a good campaign contribution to Bill Clinton, but he gets a lot of contributions from Hollywood. We're making great progress with Hollywood. I am convinced because of my speech of several months ago on the poverty of values in this country that Hollywood will begin to reflect our values better.
-- VP Dan Quayle, when asked about the season opener of the television sitcom, 'Murphy Brown' - 1992.

I'm ready.
-- VP Dan Quayle describing his ability to take over the presidency after President Bush vomits and collapses in Tokyo - 1992.

You have a part-time job, and that's better than no job at all.
-- VP Dan Quayle after the manager of the Burger King had said that the jobs offered were part-time minimum wage jobs, which didn't pay enough to live on, and that 'It's hard to find people who want to actually show up for the job.'

Ever heard of this theory of 'trickle down?' That's ridiculous. We're talking about trickling up. We're talking about climbing up the ladder.
-- VP Dan Quayle trying to encourage teenage students in Salinas, California to push themselves in school - 1992.

We're in Florida.
-- VP Dan Quayle explaining why he had just purchased four peaches (and no citrus fruits
-- for which Florida is famous) at a Publix supermarket in Oakland Park, Florida. Georgia (which IS famous for peaches) did not gain from the transaction, however; the peaches were from Chile.

I hope there's some respect and dignity for things I did not do.
-- Senator Dan Quayle defending himself against allegations of involvement with Paula Parkinson - 1988.
