SLUDGE: '60 Minutes' Documents on Bush Might Be Fake
32-year-old documents produced Wednesday by CBSNEWS 60 MINS on Bush's guard service may have been forged using a current word processing program // typed using a proportional font, not common at that time, and they used a superscript font feature found in today's Microsoft Word program, Internet reports claim...

6. 1941
IBM announces the Electromatic Model 04 electric typewriter, featuring the revolutionary concept of proportional spacing. By assigning varied rather than uniform spacing to different sized characters, the Type 4 recreated the appearance of a printed page, an effect that was further enhanced by a typewriter ribbon innovation that produced clearer, sharper words on the page. The proportional spacing feature became a staple of the IBM Executive series typewriters

Maybe they rewrote the report by Killian because the original was even WORSE for Bush.

Edited on Thu Sep-09-04 01:58 PM by librechik
there were proportional typewriters then, so quit grasping at straws, Sludgebots. We seem to have your Savior nailed.

Also, Bartlett released copies of the very same memos, claiming these were indeed the memos in question and gee, we can't imagine how they just turned up now, months after we said we had released all his records...

Sludge is just not all that great a reporter. Or else he is deliberately suppressing this essential fact.

Truth hurts, doesn't it?

If you didn't know it, there's a liberal site called The Sludge Report. Calling Drudge "Sludge" can confuse things at times.

Edited on Thu Sep-09-04 02:24 PM by Bridget Burke
I worked in an law office in Houston about the time Bush Jr was pulling his shenanigans. My, what interesting people I met!

The job surely improved my typing skills. Five carbons were needed for each page. And I had to figure out the proportional spacing on the Selectric.

Edited for correction: It was an IBM Executive, not a Selectric.

30. I'm reminded of an old "Bloom County" comic. . .
where the bogus diaries of Elvis Presley that Opus forged were exposed as fraudulent when, on careful examination by a team of forensic scientists, they were found to be written on "official Dukes of Hazard stationery."

Oh, yeah. Someone went to all that trouble to forge the letters, making sure the signature was correct and the paper properly aged and yellowed, then think no one would notice it was all done on a Mac in Adobe Garamond, output on an Epson color ink jet.

31. big ?: Why did the whitehouse pass on these docs if they are fake?
Shouldn't Bush have known these were forgeries? If they are, they should have known.

Now the problem is the Freeps did this before their efforts could be coordinated by the central scrutinizer.

This has all the hallmarks of a circular firing squad in the Bush camp.
