the unbearable sadness of believing what the media says . . .
one of the secretaries at my doctor's office is an ardent Bush supporter, and self-described conservative Republican . . . while I've made my feelings about Bush known, I won't press the issue because she lost her only son in the World Trade Center collapse on 9/11 . . .

what's unbearably sad to me is that the person she is supporting was either indirectly or, more likely, directly responsible for her son's death . . . not wishing to compound her pain, I obviously can't say that to her . . . but it really distresses me every time she mentions that she can't possibly vote for Kerry because "he's a liberal, and he has that long face" (I kid you not), and that she thinks Bush "is doing a good job" . . .

I just find it really heartwrenching that the way things are in this country allows someone like this woman (sho is really quite nice) to support someone who caused her son's death for the highest office in the land . . . getting all of her information from television, she has absolutely no clue what the truth really is . . . because the corporate media has never investigated what really happened on 9/11, and likely never will . . .

1. Tell her the truth.

2. Ask her if she really thinks America can't do better. Tell her that
you're an optimist and you really think we're capable of achieving so much more as a nation and that these last four years have been awful for a lot of people who could have been contributing to society in great ways.

3. It's more cruel to let her lie to herself...

Eventually, the truth will come out. Unless Bush gets his "rapture" (or as I heard a Baptist Minister proclaim it: "The Lord's Day Of Terror") before all the lies fall apart...

4. Put together some information and "accidentally' leave it
with the magazines or at her counter when she's absent or in the ladies room. ( Okay, if you're a guy this would be a covert operation.)

I believe you owe it to her - a fellow human - to try to avail her of the truth if at all possible, and shrewdly-placed reading material might be the non-confrontational beginning of that process.
