This played on NBC late night news in SoCa.....
Lead story: Candlelight vigil honoring the 1000+ U.S. dead in Iraq. The name of each dead soldier was being read aloud. Vigils were held at three different locations in the City as part of a nationwide protest of the war. An older woman says "It could be MY son - I couldn't, just couldn't possibly lose him." She chokes up, excuses herself then turns away to hide her vulnerability.
Within minutes the spotlight was on a local Vet who served with Kerry and broke a 30-yr silence to go on the radio to proclaim him an honest and honorable man. The critics are wrong , he says. Military records to prove the Vet's service and credibility were shown on the screen. His daughters had urged him to come forward to tell his story.
This was immediately followed by a brief clip of the Bush* "hecklers" being roughly and boisterously removed from his speaking engagement. It was a scene of chaos and pandemonium.
A very subtle but powerful - almost subliminal - message was sent by tonight's broadcast.. The focus was quietly, peacefully and poignantly on the war and the many loved ones - people just like you and me - that have tragically been lost......Kerry's a decent human being who's seen the ravages of war firsthand.....Bush* is vehemently opposed.
Despite the various polls and spin, I want to believe that the media is slowly sensing the mood in the country, shifting their perspective and reporting accordingly. If tonight stands as an example of their future broadcasts then there's hope yet and no need to despair......just keep letting them know who their audience is!
