Florida DUers... Is there any "focused" Aid Outreach?

As I sat there mesmerized by the horrific damage in Punta Gorda, and other places, I thought that there are a lot of people who really need help, and I am averse to writing a check to the Red Cross and having my hard earned money go to a person who will gleefully stab us in the back in a few months.. (I know..that's a terrible thing to think, but.....)

I even went online and contacted a person directly in Florida..She's listed as a Democratic Women's Club member, and I just cold called her.. We chatted for about a half hour and she will be joining us here when (IF) she ever gets electricity again.. She said she did not know of any organizing going on down there.. Dems helping Dems..but said she would try to find out..

She said that the damage is so widespread (she lost about 1/3 of her own house, and they are still living in it :cry:...the very people who could organize something, are so overwhelmed with their own calamity..

any ideas..??

does anyone know someone??

1. Wish there were such a thing...

As we batten down the hatches and prepare for yet a third hurricane. I'm thankful I can come to the office. Here, there is air conditioning and electricity, toilets that flush with running water, not to mention a Mr Coffee brewed cup of coffee. Still cant go home yet -- some kind of issue with the roof. Hopefully soon, although no power there either. Somehow when I moved to florida, I didnt think I would be staying at the primitive camp site (not to mention I get to pay extra for it too!) Ahh well, perhaps this hurricane will take a turn and whack the tallahasee bush (one can dream you know....)

Maybe someone should start a DU first aid station? We could ask any Florida DUers with needs to try and get us word?

3. Actually our area has mailing lists, and we check on each other.

There is a DEC list, an I-4 Corridor Democrats list, and a list for Democracy for America people. One guy sort of took on the task during Charley of checking on the ones he could reach and sharing their stories. Here is his blog.
