Boycott Monday Night Football
For those of you who were watching last night's game, you may or may not have noticed that Al Michaels took a swipe at John Kerry.

When the Colts had the ball on the 1-yard line, and Edgerrin James fumbled on the next play, John Madden then commented that the Colts had flip flopped. To which Al Michaels made the snarky reply "Well, this is the state for that."

ABC has already tried to let obnoxious right wing politics into their sports coverage when they hired Rush Limbaugh last year. Let them know that Al Michaels' political commentary has no place on MNF.

5. NEVER!
Politics may be important, but only work or family will interfere with MNF! It is, for me, the only network show worth watching anymore.

Never watched football anyway, though. The only time I came close to football and its players was when I was getting beat up in high school. ;)

8. What exactly has he flip flopped about though?
Is it during his time in the Senate? Are there any specific cases, where he suddenly changed his mind even when there were no new and decisive factors changing the situation?

10. I won't boycott....
Why? Over a quick joke? Christ how is this any different from the Dixie Chicks BS with the freepers(I am talking of the freepers boycotting and not the radio stations that became jerks about it)?

Have we become so whipped into a frenzy that we have become as reactonary as those we despise?

"Al Michaels' political commentary has no place on MNF"

If this is what we supposedly stand for.....than I'll have to stand apart.

I'll be knocking on doors and getting people registered and touting Kerry whenever I can. This is a bunch fascist crap with a an attractive liberal label.

11. Al Michaels isn't an artist
Edited on Fri Sep-10-04 01:15 PM by Sandpiper
He's a football commentator. And when I watch a football game, that's what I expect him to do.

Maybe you should pull you had out of...the sand...and see that ABC has been trying to inject right wing politics into their sports coverage for the past few years.

And as for you calling me a fascist, not put to fine a point on it, but,

Fuck you

12. Really?
So when freep-idiots claim they went to see Linda Ronstadt sing and not screed about politics or when they did the same crap to Don Henley when he also lended his support. Or when people told Moore that the Oscars wasn't the place for his remarks about Bush?

What do we call rightfully that shit?

Lipstick on a pig doesn't make it any prettier.

14. We call it artistic expression
Please tell me how Al Michaels is an artist and your red herring argument might actually have merit.

Last I checked though, Al Michaels was a play by play man for football games.

Over the past few years, ABC Sports has hired Dennis Miller and Rush Limbaugh. Al Michaels is now making political comments on their football broadcasts.

But apparently ABC's efforts to infuse sports coverage with right wing politics is ok with you.

With friends like you...

17. Free speech is free speech
Sorry but artistic expression has no higher value over anyone else's right to express their opinion and does not insulate the performer from criticism by the audience.

I'd say the inconsistency is being shown by anyone who feels that Al is subject to criticism while excusing an entertainer. Hell, you can at least turn off the volume on the TV. The concert audience's only choice is to pretty much walk out of the concert.

19. You're right
And I'm exercising mine. And I'm getting called a fascist by DUers because a wingnut football announcer used his announcing gig as a vehicle to make derrogatory comments about the Democratic Presidential Candidate, and I'm encouraging other DUers not support him doing that.

The reason why we're running behind now is because of people with attitudes like yours.

"Go along to get along, it was all in good fun."

The wingnuts screw us over every chance they get, and your suggestion is to say "Thank you sir, may I have another."

Sorry, but I don't favor the appeasement route.

22. Only artists get free speech?
"Please tell me how Al Michaels is an artist and your red herring argument might actually have merit."

Talk about your some are more equal than others argument.

"Last I checked though, Al Michaels was a play by play man for football games."

Hey we agree on something

"Over the past few years, ABC Sports has hired Dennis Miller and Rush Limbaugh."

It also fired their asses when one wasn't funny and the other made deragatory racial comments.

"Al Michaels is now making political comments on their football broadcasts."

Now? Try for years and years. He was making Clinton jokes back in the day.

"But apparently ABC's efforts to infuse sports coverage with right wing politics is ok with you."

I would hardly call a little joke an infusion of a right wing agenda. But hey I see you have your mountian making to continue so I will leave it be.

I do apologize for throwing around the word fascist though. That was wrong.

16. And most people go to see concert artists in order to hear them sing
and not spout off their political opinions.

What's the difference between what you just said re: Al Michaels and a FReeps outrage over Ronstadt, Henley, Stipe or Bono, etc. interjecting their opinions during a concert.

Answer: NONE

18. More Red Herring
When someone goes to a concert to hear Ronstadt, Henley, Stipe, or Bono, those people are the focus of the event.

When someone tunes in to Monday Night Football, they're watching it because of the football game, not because of Al Michaels.

It disturbs me to see DUers sticking up for Al Michaels using Monday Night Football as a forum to insult our presidential candidate.

It's all in good fun after all.

And it's been such a winning strategy for us.

And are you listening to yourself?

I've yet to hear explain why I ought to indulge Al Michaels' political commentary in football broadcats.

Because I'm a fascist if I don't?

Anything to offer other than name calling?

27. And you
are doing nothing more than accusing people of basically being enablers, or whatever the new chic term is for anyone who doesn't completely toe your line.

You have yet to actually listen to the arguments being presented, and are only expressing this idiotic, fake outrage because someone made a not-friendly-to-Kerry comment instead of bashing Bush.

Ask yourself - would you be pissed if Michaels had taken a shot at Bush? No, you wouldn't.

Pissed, probably not. But I would have found it inappropriate. The game that I'm watching is A-political. Political commentary about it simply doesn't belong.

30. I had apologized for the facist comment...
It was wrong and way too hyperbolic.

"I've yet to hear explain why I ought to indulge Al Michaels' political commentary in football broadcats."

You don't. There's a mute button. There's a on/off switch.

You want more than that you want him off the air for a freaking stupid joke. You want to put his liveihood at stake. Perhaps you are comfortable with people being fired for making political commentary at work but I certainly am not.

Free speech is for everyone not just artists, not just those that support our causes. Its for every single one of us including idiots who use hair in a can.
