TANG Typewriter Follies; Wingnuts Wrong -DailyKos - forgery debunked !!
TANG Typewriter Follies; Wingnuts Wrong

(From the diaries -- kos)
Against my own better judgment, but because I believe that the more rapidly charges are countered, the better, I spend a goodly portion of the last day researching -- shudder -- typewriters of the '60s and '70s. As everyone on the planet no doubt knows by now, the hard-right of the freeper contingent -- specifically, LittleGreenFootballs, a site which frequently is cited for eliminationist rhetoric and veiled racism, and PowerLine, a site linked to with admiration by such luminaries as Michelle Malkin and Hugh Hewitt -- discovered that if you used the same typeface, you could make documents that looked almost -- but not exactly -- like the TANG documents discovered by CBS News. This qualifies as big news, of course, so from those two sites, the story has spread into the mainstream media through the usual channels, most notably Drudge, NRO, etc.

This crap needs to be stopped. It is ridiculous that the documents can be "outed" as forgeries when they are not.

10. CBS NEWS will address the "th" superscript issue at 6:30pm
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/09/06/politics/main641481.shtml

"Friday afternoon, CBS News addressed one of the authenticity issues raised, whether typewriters in the 1960s had the "th" superscript key. "CBS News states with absolute certainty that the ability to produce the "th" superscript mentioned in reports about the documents did exist on typewriters as early as 1968, and in fact is in President Bush's official military records released by the White House, CBS said in a statement. The issue will be addressed in Friday's Evening News broadcast, 6:30 p.m. ET.

New to DU. Thank you DUers (sp?) you lift up my spirits. Keep up the great work!

<One of the differences between the Times New Roman as implemented on the IBM machines, as opposed to Microsoft Word? The IBM machines apparently had the alternative '4' character that matched these memos, while Microsoft Word's TNR does not.

Oops.>

21. Wierd typeballs
I grew up during they heydey of IBM electric typewriters. In locations where kwel stuff was being done eg. science, languages, doctoral theses, there'd be a room full of typewriters and off the corner would be a box of typeballs with weird stuff on them like Greek characters, little numbers for foot notes.

Some typewriters had special keys for 1/4, and 1/2, mine (an Olivetti) had French symbols and some chemistry stuff (eg. degree) and the little footnote numbers. Somebody even had a peace sign symbol made up.

Generally you put the stuff on your typewriter either using a typebal or buying one customized (like mine). A military base would be using "th", "rd", "nd" all the time so they'd probably have that typeball handy or even installed by default. They may only have been available in certain fonts which may be why the memo was written in a non-courier font in the first place.

They no longer matter. The Neo Fascists sow the seeds of doubt and they sideline the real issue. Uh...what was that?

25. Dan Rather & CBS SOLID!
I watched the evening report. Dan Rather was convincing and confident.
He also reframed and condensed the whole issue to several questions:

1) Did Lt.bush* refuse to follow a direct order from his superior officer during wartime.(my bold, but Rather emphasized this also.)

Rather followed with several other questions concerning the missed physical and his suspension from flying, but the 1st question will become the focus of the CBS story, as it should be.

Documentation of bush*s refusal to report for his physical has been around for a while There were .gifs of these orders and bush*s grounding posted here on DU in Feb. of 2000.

My question is this:
Why did Dan Rather and CBS decide to return from the darkside?
