So which American News Outlet can i trust?
It had always been CNN and CBS, but lately they've both been swinging to the right. Definitely not the Fascist News Channel, and I've never watched ABC.

NBC is the No Bullshit Channel and lately i've been trusting them, and of course Jim Lehrer is always fair and balanced if a little low-key and boring.

So who do y'all watch and trust?

2. Honestly... I don't trust any one source
I try to get my news from several sources... compare the coverage of the items... best way to get the whole story.

6. So who do you use
as your sources?

right now i'm pretty much using, NBC, Lehrer, The Daily Show and Bill Maher. :p

I absolutely cannot bring myself to watch Fox because the juvenile and random French and Kerry Bashing is highly unpalateable.

16. AP, Reuters, BBC, CNN....
I do try to stick to mainstream sources though, don't want to end up in tin foil hat land. I think the most important thing is to seperate out the opinion from fact. XYZ may have happened at 5pm but don't let someone else tell you it was "tragic"... watch those descriptive words. News media often like to color their stories in such a way where they try to tell you what to think about the information they're presenting. Get several sources, stick to the who, what, where, why, and when, stay away from "I think", "Some people say", "The American people want", and other such nonsense.

4. I used to watch just CBS, but that is changing...
MSNBC sometimes, no more Conservative News Network or Faux, or course. PBS is good but Lehrer really puts me to sleep. NPR is also good most of the time.

Best news is non-American based, like CBC and BBC.

9. NONE
You will have to read the AP Wire, Reuters, BBC word service, the Guardian et al, listen to Air America... but for the most part do a lot of your own work to figure out what is going on in this cuontry.

Mainstream media is no longer free, fair or balanced and it will take a lot of reforms, including the return of the fairness doctrine to make it so

14. Agreed. You'll need to do your own legwork.
Both NPR and PBS have shifted rightward due to corporate financing and threats of funding cuts from the Republican Congress. They've begun the same "opinions differ" approach to infotainment, and News Hour was wildly biased in coverage of the two conventions (no Dems whatsoever critiquing the RNC, while they had regular Dem-bashing during the DNC).

All other "mainstream" sources may occasionally get a story right, but more often miss the story or present it from a "opinions differ" viewpoint (i.e. with little to no fact-checking or holding officials to account). (Fox, of course, is unique among the TV news sources in the level of coordination and cooperation with a political party/viewpoint.)

10. I wouldn't call Lehrer "fair and balanced" --
what passes for "fair and balanced" these days is repeating Repug lies as if they have some moral equivalency with the truth, or making sure to have Repug spinners in the lineup to counter the truth unchallenged. I don't usually watch NewsHour, but whenever I do, I'm invariably disappointed.

If you want the truth, you'd best make the internet your best friend. DU is, IMO, a very good place to start. Not only is there a lot of breaking news, there's also a lot of analysis and research that goes on, some of it worth more than others but all of it free. ;-) And in general a far sight better than what you'll ever get from any of the network or cable news programs.

11. No channel in particular
Edited on Fri Sep-10-04 01:04 PM by slavkomae
But some pundits aren't so horrible. Keith Olbermann on MSNBC, for example; Aaron Brown on CNN as well -- even though I know that he's had many an outburst of whore-ism, he ain't no Brit Hume or nothing.

Then, there are the semi-comedians like John Stewart and Bill Maher. The two of them are definitely cool.

But press media is way above any TV -- The Nation, Mother Jones, The New Yorker.

17. CNN used to be quite good, many years ago
but the guiding forces behind it, mostly Ted Turner, have long since left and they are being run by people who quite recently visited all of the Republicans on the Hill to help become more fair & balanced.

15. I've totally quit..........
them. No more TV "news". These channels are merely entertainment stations that occasionally will read breaking news story. There is absolutely NO journalism or reporting that goes along with it. So, I quit. My news now comes from internet and newspapers, C-span(occasionally now) and maybe PBS/NPR radio and/or TV.

What these stations have done and continue to do to John Kerry is disgraceful! Someday, when it's too late, the pendulum will swing back ou way because we cannot survive as a nation being led by a group of thugs and crooks. We will dissipate.

20. Trust no one. Read as much as possible. Avoid TV. Read FAIR
and Media Matters to help you understand the media that you do consume.

When watching events, watch them unmoderated. If you watch the conventions or SoTU, watch them on CSPAN without the commentary. When you're done, all the excercise thinking for yourself will make you stronger and smarter.

Skip the commentary altogether and have one-on-one conversations with your friends. Trust me, there is no commentator on any major network who is smarter and more honest than you or me. So, make yourself the commentator among your circle of friends, and listen to what your friends have to say too.

21. Which news outlets in the 1978 Soviet Union could be trusted?
None.

Trust samizdat, even though it's often uncorroborable or corroborated.

Something on Soviet Samizdat:

http://www.slis.ualberta.ca/issues/sbalazs/history.htm

Trust Amerikan samizdat, for there is nothing else left to trust.

But ALWAYS use your own "bullshit filter" for samizdat then and now is likely full of misinformation, too.

The difference is that the truth is NOT to be found on Imperial Pravda, no matter how many lies you wade through.

The truth is on Amerikan Samizdat, you just might have to wade through some chemtrails sites...

26. for example:
if you are watching Fox News, and someone says "swift boat veterans," your critical thinking should tell you that Kerry has moved ahead in polls.

or, if tom ridge comes on and gives a terror warning, your critical thinking should tell you that Kerry has moved ahead in polls.

or, if a republican comes on tv, your critical thinking should tell you that lies are being told.

that's basically all you need to know to follow the news.
