The Lubbock newspaper ad that could prove Bush* lies -- can we get a copy?
Early in the week, I posted a response to one of our DU threads on Bush*s military service. One line I dug up has stayed with me this week. The link to the thread is posted below, but the excerpt that is haunting me is reprinted here.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=102&topic_id=803501#804393

Finally, from Molly Ivins and Lou Dubose, in Shrub, from the Chapter entitled "Class Act: The Texas National Guard and Running for Congress", at page 16, we find:

"Bush was burdened by his image, that of an Ivy Leaguer who had moved to West Texas because he saw an open congressional seat there. (Bush also padded his military resume, claiming in a Lubbock newspaper ad that he had served on active duty. No one noticed it at the time, but when a reporter covering the presidential campaign asked Bush's press secretary, Karen Hughes, about it, she, with a straight face, calculated that flight school, added to two weeks per year with the Guard, equaled a tour of active duty. This must have amused regular Air Force pilots, who used to refer to people like Bush as 'FANGers,' for 'F---ing Air National Guard.)

Padded his military resume ????

This ad was run by Bush* during his Congressional campaign. How many papers are there in Lubbock? Would past issues be archived? Could an inspection of any archived copies reveal the literal ad? Would not a copy of this ad Bush* himself ran claiming he had served on active duty be absolutely damming if reproduced at this time?

Bush* has been ridiculing Kerry all week. If the Texans for Truth produced a commercial displaying this ad, wouldn't that be devastating to the Bush* campaign? Any ideas? Can any of our Texas DU'ers contribute anything to these questions regarding past issues of Lubbock papers?

And if we could acquire a copy and show it to the Nation, what could the Bush* campaign possibly say in defense of the credibility of the man who ran the ad himself?

2. Lubbock will scrub anything dispariging

to the Chimp.

That is about the most right-wing area this side of Idaho. W/ the exception of Texas Tech, which houses a few Liberals, Lubbock is right-wing hell from hell.

9. Email Texans for Truth at info@texansfortruth.com.
How about something like this?

Dear Texans for Truth:

Here is a question I posed on a Democratic website I frequent (see link below). Perhaps you could unearth this ad run by George Bush* during his Congressional campaign and display it to the Nation. Apparently, according to Molly Ivins, he bragged in the ad of his active military duty. Active military duty?

Thank you for your consideration.

8. Lubbock Avalanche-Journal------- pullout ad on May 4, 1978
http://www.politicalgateway.com/main/columns/read.html?col=129&id=6

Still, a pullout ad from The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal on May 4, 1978, shows a huge picture of Bush with a "Bush for Congress" logo on the front. On the back, a synopsis of his career says he served "in the U.S. Air Force and the Texas Air National Guard, where he piloted the F-102 aircraft."

Did he misrepresent the facts of his service? Of course he did. He misrepresented it to the people of the district he wanted to represent the same way he misrepresented his "veteran status" when he joined The American Legion.

***There are some notes that Bush misrepresented his active duty status to the American Legion Post he was temporarily a member of-apparently they would have had to have hid DD214 on file

12. That smirking lying SOB..............................
He WAS NOT in the USAF. My father was a career USAF officer. Prior to going on active duty with the USAF, my father was in the Air National Guard. HELLO, Georgie, there is a difference!!!!!!!!! My father took an oath upon entry to the ANG, was officially discharged, then took another oath as a formality to enter the USAF. They are separate entities.

10. Bush's own 1999 book, A Charge to Keep, specifically claimed that he
continued to fly for the rest of his service.

I think that 1999 lie is the one that could make a great ad, because it's Bush's name on the book telling his own story.

13. Any Bush* lie is helpful to the campaign if you believe Fabrizio
"But GOP pollster Tony Fabrizio said Bush could be damaged if he is caught--or perceived to be caught--in a lie." This quote is from an article in today's Washington Post entitled, "Democrats Step Up Attack on Bush Guard Record." I cannot supply the literal link because I cannot remember my password! But the website address is www.washingtonpost.com

I seek the ad because of the old platitude "a picture is worth a thousand words." It seems to me displaying a copy of the literal ad Bush* himself ran would be priceless to the Kerry campaign.

11. Any major Texas public library...
.. in a city such as in Houston or at one of the universities like UT, may have copies of these papers on film. Shouldn't be that hard to find, and I'm sure there are some sympathetic librarians out there who could help you in your search.

20. Samantha
Bell&Howell/UMI (UMI being the former name) are the people that do the microfilm copies of newspapers found in you local library. The ProQuest service is marketed to libraries and schools.

In the 1998-99 time frame I worked on setting up a software system for them that would take magazines/newspapers on film and scan them into pictures for computers, then they were put thru a process call OCR or Optical Character Recognition to extract as many words it could from the picture images. These words were then paired with the pictures and put into a large database that could be searched. IE you could search for all articles from Time magazine on President Kennedy.

They had film of magazines/newspapers going back to the 20s.
