Proportional typewriter font - in 1969 - in Vietnam!
Edited on Fri Sep-10-04 11:13 PM by TahitiNut
I'm sitting here fuming in frustration over my old scanner that won't work. (It's been limping for a while.) Today, I dragged out my old records jacket from Vietnam, and retrieved two original letters of commendation, both written at USARV HQ, Long Binh Post, Vietnam.

Both are typewritten.

Both are clearly proportional fonts.

Both are dated in military long-form: "10 August 1969" and "12 November 1969".

When I can get my scanner working (or replaced), I'll post redacted (for privacy) images of each.

Just to review ...
- this was Vietnam, not Texas. (I doubt Texas was lacking typewriters we had in Vietnam.
- this was 1969, not 1973. (I doubt the technology moved backward.)
- this was Army, not the Air National Guard. (I never knew the Army in Vietnam to get better office equipment than stateside National Guard commanders.)

The lying, corrupt bastards who mindlessly and traitorously support this criminal Bush regime ought to be jailed or thrown out of the country. The unmitigated gall of self-proclaimed experts in collusion with corrupt media who spout outright falsehoods and lies about something so damned easily refuted is obscene beyond belief.

1. Alriiiight, T.N.!!
:yourock:
I guess we've all been dragging out our records lately...me, I couldn't believe the amount of minutiae stuck in that service jacket over 6 years. No way I'm buying entire months and critical forms just "left out" of anyone's records.
Got a Kinko's or something you can scan them at?

4. There's one I'd REALLY like to see for the Smirking DimSon ...
... and that's his DA-1811 ("Physical and Mental Status on Release From Active Service") but I'm betting the son of a bitch was never properly released, or assessed.

Yeah, the folder (now just full of junk, really) is a bit like a bad trip down memory lane. (Yech.)

7. You okay? Get off memory lane for now if it's gettin' to you...
That's mighty fine news about the superscript, though. Thanks for digging.
I hope one of these bastards who covered up for shrub gets the cold sweats and starts naming names...that would be most excellent. :D

9. Yeah, but thanks for asking.
The folder has some R&R papers that authorized spouse travel and had her name and address on them in proportional typewritten font, of course ... a 'spouse' who was sleeping overnight with her lover the night I returned from 'Nam. That night (and the R&R) is one of the memories etched in the stone I use for a brain.

Neither one of the letters had reason to include superscript, though. There's no raised 'th' or 'nd' or 'st' in either one, even though I pretty clearly recall those typewriters had those special characters.

3. Get a friend to scan them for you.
Or, go to Kinko's.

Send a copy to Dan Rather, with an explanation. Write a LTTE.

Thanks for the post.

:yourock:

I wonder where my husband has his records. Hmmmmm.

My scanner is out of commission, too. I am hoping it is just a fried cable.

5. Pass it on
On Sept. 11, if you see EVEN ONE Bush campaign ad using 9-11 imagery, call the White House. Pass it on. It's bad enough when he politicizes the deaths of 3,000 Americans on other days. But if he does it on Sept. 11, it'll be an outrage.
Please e-mail EVERYONE YOU KNOW and ask them to do the same!

8. Oh... and the manually-typed 4-line heading on one is ... (wait for it) ..
... centered! :eyes:

I'll have to go out tomorrow and try to find a Kinko's. (Shit)
