On Monday, the 10-year ban on selling military-style semiautomatic assault weapons in the U.S. will end because Congress would not vote to extend the law. What do you think?

11.4%
The ban should be re-enacted. There is no legitimate reason for people to own these guns. (3123 responses)

88.6%
I agree with the NRA. The ban was ineffective, in part because these weapons are rarely used in crimes. (24227 responses)

2. Amazing
Sun-Sentinel's center of circulation is Broward County which is the most Democratic county in the state of Florida.

4. The results don't surprise me at all
A lot of Democrats like me own guns too, even here in California which is overall a lot more liberal and Democratic than Broward County. It's not the Democrat/Republican or Liberal/Conservative issue it's usually spun as.

Internet poll results are meaningless because respondents select themselves. I read several different message boards, and I guarantee you for every thread like this on a liberal message board exhorting people to "un-Freep" the poll, there are 10 or 20 threads on conservative boards and gun-related boards saying the opposite. Pro-RKBA people are quick to jump on these silly polls.

12. Believe me......
Broward County is "off the charts" Democratic. Unless Kerry-Edwards piles up a huge vote in Broward (and Palm Beach), we will not carry Florida.

Ok, I guess that includes...uh, TERRORISTS!? Hey, he did say EVERYBODY! (Mind you, I am PARAPHRASING!) If John Asscrack's love of protecting terrorist 2nd Ammendment rights is any indication...

If I was a single issue voter, I would be voting for Georgie. As it stands, I am trying to convince my gun-toting buddies of the OTHER things to consider.

They see stuff like this from progressives, and it skeers 'em back to the dumb side.

18. Sorry, I was speaking of the larger picture
Meaning, folks who own guns but are otherwise left-leaning sometimes end up voting Republican.

I am right-leaning on some things (guns, capital punishment), but I try to keep the larger picture in mind, and for the last, oh, 24 years, I feel that Republicans have been bad for the country as a whole.

Heck, just in this election, folks should ask themselves, don't you want the SMARTER person leading the country?

21. So, what you are saying is that YOU as a democrat support the NRA
and oppose the ban, but I as a democrat am not allowed to oppose the NRA and support the ban, because it "MIGHT" influence single-issue (gun) voters from voting for Kerry. Right. I guess we should also give up all our other issues like abortion rights and gay rights, because it might make those anti-choice and anti-gay people vote for Bush. Right.

25. That's a very good question. But I gotta tell you, I don't think the
government should have exclusive access to weapons not ordinarily available to law-abiding citizens.

Now, before you go ballistic (no pun intended!), think about it...don't simply look at it as me getting some nuclear weapon (I don't want one!), but rather think of it as the government is RESTRICTED from having anything they wouldn't trust me with.

Just curious. A lot of people really have no idea, or have the wrong idea entirely.

Can you explain why a gun that will be available Monday morning is so much worse than one available today?

23. Please don't attack me - I'm trying to open a dialogue
I think the ban is pointless because it addresses mainly cosmetic features that do not make "assault weapons" any more dangerous than similar firearms that lack those features.

The sky will not fall when the ban goes away Monday as it was designed to do. Remember, the sunset clause was a compromise needed to get the ban passed in 1994 when Democrats were in the majority in both houses of Congress.

I was responding to you asking me if I knew what it meant, as if I would enter into this discourse and feel so strongly about something without knowing what the issue is. That's all. And yes, many of them are far more dangerous. And putting them on the market will encourage a whole lot of yahoos to go out and buy one, just to say they own one of them there previously banned guns, and can show it to all their buddies, and teach their children to shoot with them. Do we really need to put MORE weapons on the street?

On edit, I grew up in a household with a lot of guns, and shot a few myself as a child. Shotguns, Rifles, Mouser Submachine Gun, Pistols. My brother shot me at close range with a pellet gun, scarring my back amazingly... and he REALLY didn't intend to hit me. What if he had a more powerful weapon? And my father pulled a pistol on my older brother in a fit of rage... I've seen enough.

And yes, many of them are far more dangerous....

More dangerous than weapons you can buy brand-new, today?

How so?

Do we really need to put MORE weapons on the street?

There are many kinds of firearms available now to anyone who really wants one and can pass a background check. Expiration of the AW ban will add a few more models and versions to that very large array of choices. How will that put more guns on the street?

To me that's like suggesting that General Motors once again offering Buicks with convertible tops would put more cars on the road.

The obvious solution would be not to ban them in the first place.

As for the other, nah... the info is out there, and I'm outta this thread. :hi:

37. No need
I'm more concerned about the ability to buy new "high capacity" magazines for my handguns. Presently I can buy ones made previous to 1994, but the prices are too high.

With the ban expiring tomorrow, prices should come way down.

I have no personal "need" for an "assualt weapon," but I respect the rights of those who are trained and have a background cehck to purchase one.
