NPR: Freeper forgery charges made BEFORE memos were online...
Edited on Sat Sep-11-04 09:57 AM by Junkdrawer
Things that make you go hmmmmm....

NPR is reporting that the forgery charges were made on an "online blog" before the 60 Minutes II broadcast was over. The statement is at the very end of this report:

http://www.npr.org/features/feature.php?wfId=3912384

By 'Online blog", they were refering to, of course, the FreeRepublic. I looked up the now infamous post:

To: Howlin
Howlin, every single one of these memos to file is in a proportionally spaced font, probably Palatino or Times New Roman.

In 1972 people used typewriters for this sort of thing, and typewriters used monospaced fonts.

The use of proportionally spaced fonts did not come into common use for office memos until the introduction of laser printers, word processing software, and personal computers. They were not widespread until the mid to late 90's. Before then, you needed typesetting equipment, and that wasn't used for personal memos to file. Even the Wang systems that were dominant in the mid 80's used monospaced fonts.

I am saying these documents are forgeries, run through a copier for 15 generations to make them look old.

This should be pursued aggressively.

So let me get this straight:

Buckhead took one glance at the TV screen, saw the proportional spacing and identified the font.

I've been saying it was a Rove plant and this caps it for me.

UPDATE: NPR might be wrong about this. See posts #7 & #10

1. I would say more likely, Rove already had seen these documents
long ago, remember they destroyed the copies from Bush's files in 97, and had this story ready in case any other copies showed up.

2. I bet Rove commissioned the creation of these files.
Remember that Dan Rather is a co-owner of a ranch with Donald Rumsfeld.

8. Another way to look at it.... Rather admits his are copies...
and we know that Shrug's records were scrubbed and that he hired an private investigator prior to 1999 to find out what "dirt" was out there on him. It is certainly possible they found these memos and thought they had all copies-- only to find that a set was still out there. Thus, having the originals, they had already knew what they could plant out there to raise doubt, but knowing they actually are "real," and not knowing exactly how much Rather would have to authenticate them, chose NOT to directly question their authenticity. For all Rove et al would know, Rather might have located the secretary who typed the actual memos or someone who had read them....

Rove may well be involved, but did not necessarily create them.

3. Not sure what you mean...
The poster "Howlin" posted upthread the link to the CBS site that had the documents online at 8:17 PDT.

They're saying the documents weren't posted online until after that time? I don't get it.

4. I looked at that link and CBS only had text summaries, not images...
AFTER the broadcast, the images of the memos were made available.

7. Ok, but I still don't quite get it.
I mean, the poster posted it at 8:17 PM PDT which is 11:17 PM EST. Isn't this after 60 Minutes has aired? I don't watch 60 Minutes much, so I'm not sure what time it airs on wednesdays.

10. Well, you're right about the PDT/EST thing...
and NPR and ABC got that wrong.

Anyway to know when CBS posted the documents?

12. I don't when the docs were posted, but...
... if NPR and ABC were going by the timestamps on the freeper thread, then it's just shoddy reporting.

Of course, using FR as a news source is the epitome of shoddy reporting.

I would assume that the docs were posted by 11 PM est, but I could be wrong.

5. To lie, you do not need to "see" - blue smoke up the media's ass is
a Rove constant - and the media seems to love it!

An IBM Executive Typewriter of the 60's is the most likely device (look at the "e")as it did the centering and proportional,

but the IBM Composer(of 64) is also quite able to do everything!

As the media tries to explain why they fell yet again for a GOP Rove con job.

The Docs are real - authentic - and devastating!

6. Let's see how this plays in the coming week...
Either the 'taint' causes the issue to be dropped

--OR---

"Someone" will present side-by-sides of the memos done with:

1.) MS Word
2.) IBM Selectric Composer
3.) IBM Selectric Executive (w/ special "TH" key)

What I will be looking for is who the "someone" is.

While I'm hoping they're proven real, I can't help but smell the unmistakable stench of Rove.

11. RNC wabted Carville, Begala off CNN so they don't get access to ads
polls or other W campaign info....always look at their accusations to see what they are up to.
